DEVON have brought Plympton' rising talent Josh Mailling into the 12-man squad for today's Minor Counties Cup game against Cornwall at Redruth.Mailling - an early order batter and lively seam bowler - has come up through the Devon Cricket Board Youth system from the age of 13. Last season he captained the Devon under-17 side and averaged more than 40 with the bat.
Mailling's talent was picked up by the Devon League, who named him as their young player of the year. Previous winners include Mark Lathwell and Chris Read, both of whom went on to play for England.
And Somerset had a look at Mailling last week, inviting him to play in a three-day Second Eleven Trophy game against Glamorgan at Taunton Vale.
A solid performance with bat and ball for Devon Lions against Oxford MCCU on Friday cemented Mailling's place in the squad.
'Josh looked the part against some good quality opposition and with little riding on the game for us it is a good chance to have another look at him,' said Devon CCC's director of cricket Keith Donohue.
'To be fair he wasn't the only one we considered as Rhys Davis didn't do a lot wrong either.
'That is the benefit of games like that. We get to see how our best youngsters can do against quality players.'
Mailling has been brought in to replace Liam Lewis, who has dropped out due to work commitments.
Missing from the side beaten by Hertfordshire at Instow two weeks ago are opener Rob Woodman and all-rounder Neil Hancock.
Rob Holman and Matt Kidd had already been drafted into the side.
Exmouth batsman David Lye will play despite suffering an injury at Torquay yesterday.
Lye had to have seven stitches in a facial wound after being hit by a rising delivery from Ben Passenger.
Devon are unlikely to progress beyond the group stages of the Cup this season having already lost to Oxfordshire and Hertfordshire.
