STOKE Gabriel’s rising star Angus Lee reprised his heroics in this season’s Narracott Cup final with a four-wicket haul the Narracott Chairman’s XI beat a Torquay Chairman’s XI by 11 runs in Bank Holiday celebration game at the Recreation Ground.
This year marked the 60th anniversary of the competition, which started as midweek evening tournament back in 1951.
The match was arranged to mark the diamond jubilee and among the players were a number of players who had been man of the match in the final.
Mike Pugh, Abbotskerswell’s man of the match when they won in 1993, rolled back the years to hit 83 as the Torquay team set off in hot pursuit of the 241 needed to win.
Lee, who took two wickets early on to send back Stoke Gabriel clubmate Matt Taylor and first-ball victim Mickey Wilkinson (Torquay), came back for his second spell to remove Torquay pair Nick Watkin and Jon Rice as Narracotts got on top.
Lee finished with four for 35 Chairman’s team ran out of steam at 229 with Harold Stevenson run out off the last ball of the match. Lee was man of the match in the final against Totnes earlier in the season thanks to a previous four-wicket haul. He will get his second man-of-the-match trophy, just as soon as it arrives from the engravers!
Earlier, Narracott’s captain Conrad Sutcliffe opted to bat first after winning the toss and was rewarded with a total of 240 for eight.
Opener Luke Tuckett (Ipplepen) top scored with 70 – he and Ryan Stevenson (61) made 136 for the second wicket – then Ollie Higgs chipped in with 48. Pick of the bowlers was Watkin with four for 28.
Chris Kelmere (48) and Pugh got the Torquay XI motoring, then captain Matt Thompson (35) took over.
After Thompson was caught under a steepler by opposite number Sutcliffe, the run-rate started to climb. Thirty-six off the last five overs proved a few too many, although Stoke Gabriel’s Rob Baker (1998 man of the match) gave it a go in a brisk 17 not out.
