STAY IN NORTH DEVON LEAGUE - TABLESRAIN hit week 11 of the Stay In Devon North Devon league with nine of the 17 matches washed out after the Saturday night deluge.They played one of the two top flight matches and it produced an eye-catching result in as much as it gave Bideford their first win and Sandford their first defeat! What’s more the victory lifted Bideford off the bottom of the table. Matt Allin stroked his way to a superb 110 and Will Barrett chipped in with 65 in a home total of 218-8. Luke Wright claimed 3-34 for Sandford who were then bowled out for 141 with only Ben Clements (41) making much impression as Dave Hart (5-50) and Martin Steward (3-12) combined to take the bulk of the wickets.
The entire programme was washed out in Division Two with all four games at Halberton (v Weare Giffard), Incorrigibles (v Beaford), Shebbear (v Lynton and Lynmouth ) and Victoria Park (v Heathcoat), meeting a watery grave.
Just one of the four Division Three games was played and it saw Bideford II complete a club double for the day beating Sandford II on their own patch. Ed Binns and John Weeks combined to put 118 on for the first wicket for Bideford. Binns eventually fell for 80 and Weeks one short of a half century. Ian Hayter chipped in with 32 allowing the visiting side to close on 231-4. Alex Hannam (3-10) and Ian Hayter (3-40) then worked in tandem to bowl the Creedy Park side out for 148. Chris Blake (44) and Mike Durand (39) were the two home batsmen to offer the most resistance.
They were denied action owing to rain at Holsworthy (v North Devon II), Newton Tracey II (v Belstone) and Victoria Park (v Bishop Fleming).
In Division Four they enjoyed the luxury of a full programme with all four matches played to a finish. Ilfracombe moved join top of the table with a 16 run home win over Barnstaple and Pilton II. Mark Cavanagh (33) and Rob Holmes (19) provided the biggest contributions in an Ilfracombe total of 136-9. Matthew Jarvis took 2-17 for Barum who were then restricted to 120-9 with only Matt Clark (19) and Dave Loder (18) making an impression. Jason Newman took 3-12 for Ilfracombe who now share the leadership with Barum.
North Devon III won a low scoring affair at Instow against Petrockstowe. Ross Clayton (18) and Dan Pickard (18) led the home offering of 105. Nigel Cockwill (3-4), Lee Cockwill (3-32) and Brendon Harris (3-32) were the wicket takers for Petrockstowe who were then bowled out for just 64. Tim Cook (pictured) claimed 4-27 for the home side and Sam Witheridge picked up 3-7 with only Gary Tong (18) and as many extra’s boosting the Petrockstowe total.
James Cory ended up on the losing side, but his contribution merited much better. First he took 4-41 to help restrict hosts Heathcoat II to 191-9 and then he hit 95 in his side’s reply of 95. Jim Cridland (74) and Pete Guest (30) had been the main contributors to the Heathcoat cause.
Filleigh II were 18 run winners at Kelseymen where they bowled the Braunton side out for 168 after posting a total of 186-7. Kevin Tooze (43), Baljit Kalsi (27) and Godfrey Ticker (26) were the main providers of runs for Filleigh with Martin Lewis (3-31) and John Higgs (2-36) the principle wicket takers. Kelseymen’s reply was led by Gary Brooke with 68, but the undoubted star of the second innings was Filleigh’s Anna Squire who claimed 5-31.
Hatherleigh II produced the result of the day as they became the first team to inflict a defeat on Division Five leaders Bishops Nympton in a low scoring affair. Jack Ashmore (51) and Brian Stacey (26) combined to see Hatherleigh to 120. Will Palmer took 3-13 and Steve Cockram 2-1 for Bishops Nympton who lost top place in the table after being bowled out for 75. Will Palmer (21) and Toby Lochead (13) were the main run getters as Brian Stacey (4-170, skipper Dave Manning (3-11) and Ed Dumbleton (3-22) made sure that Hatherleigh were celebrating a 45 run victory at stumps.
There was no play possible at Barnstaple and Pilton III where Victoria Park II were due to play. The unfortunate Victoria Park side have now been hit by the weather more than any other side throughout the league. Sunday’s washout at Barum was the sixth time in eight matches that they have been denied action by the weathe
