Kalsi ton not enough for Filleigh

BIDEFORD confirmed their status as the new leaders of the Farm & Cottage Holidays, North Devon Cricket League with a four-wicket win in a thrilling contest against Filleigh.

The game was not decided until the penultimate over of the day when Josh King struck the winning runs for the home side. Filleigh batted first and posted a healthy 245-6, led there by Jaz Kalsi who struck 103.

Nick Dartnoll (53) and Joe Witheridge (31) gave the best of the supporting acts whilst James Ford (3-48) and King (2-38) were the principle wicket takers. The home side then looked troubled before Josh King, at number six, put bat to ball with great effect hitting an unbeaten 59 as he and skipper Ian Hayter (15no) added an unbroken half century partnership to see their side to 248-6 and a four wicket win. Matt Allin (52) and James Ford (32) were the other run providers for the table toppers.

Hatherleigh won by 19 runs in another close encounter at Newton Tracey. Ryan Davies (34) and Gareth Tidball (25) led their side to 150 with Rob Gear the chief wicket taker, claiming 6-21.

Gear then hit a top score of 30 before the Newton Tracey reply floundered on 131 with Nick Fishleigh taking 5-33.

The race for the First Division title continues to be one of the closest for years with the Newton Tracey defeat in week 14 meaning that all the top flight sides have now lost at least three games each! Just a three points average separates leaders Bideford from fifth placed Newton Tracey with Hatherleigh, North Devon and Filleigh also in contention for the top honour.

DIVISION TWO

The top two in Division Two both won and with something to spare as Barnstaple and Pilton thumped visiting Victoria Park and Beaford beat struggling Morebath by eight wickets.

Barum chalked up 236-5 with Danny Donovan top scoring with 62. Ross Burbidge (55) and Steve Moore (32no) also chipped in whilst Rick Kelly took 3-40 for the visitors. Ian Brown and Mike Cashmore then both hit scores of 14 and there were 24 extras to help nudge the Victoria Park reply up to its close of 100.

Morebath arrived at Beaford with nine men and were dismissed for 86 with Richard Saville (35) and Steve Kelland (30) the principle run getters. Mark Lake took 4-14 for the hosts and then hit an unbeaten 41 as he and Daniel Lane (20no) saw their side to a comfortable win.

DIVISION THREE

Bude climbed off the bottom spot in Division Three with a big win at home to Filleigh II. Andrew De Rosa struck a sparkling unbeaten 130 to lead the home side to 298-4. Colin Robins returned the impressive figures of 3-35 for Filleigh who were then bowled out for 130 with Simon Prosser unbeaten at the close on 58. Sam Hockin picked up five wickets for just seven runs for Bude.

Holsworthy climbed out of the bottom two with a 105 run win over top three side Newton Tracey II. Ryan Walter (49) and Andrew Butler (32) were the main run getters for Holsworthy in a total of 196-7. Charles Cobbledick took 4-33 and Jack Greening claimed 3-19 as the visitors were bundled out for 91.

North Devon II stroked their way to an impressive 242-8 at Sandford II. Tom Ansell (75) and Joe Kelly (37) were the main run scorers whilst Alex Stevens took 3-37 for the Creedy Park side who were then bowled out for 194 with Gary Abdul (69) top scoring. Tom Sparrow chipped in with 35 but it was the combination of Joe Kelly (4-37) and Raymond Clark (3-35) that did the damage for the visiting side.

DIVISION FOUR

In Division Four there were big wins for Braunton Kelsey and North Devon III. Ali Kelly (43) and Cameron Henderson (42) led the Instow men to 253 with Adam Randleson claiming 3-44 and Mark Slade picking up 3-46 for visiting Victoria Park II who were the bowled out for 128. Kieron Soper top scored with 36 and there was a useful 21 from Stuart Russell as Craig Overton took 3-16 and Luke Ansell bagged 3-23.

Darryl Hawkins was the star of the show for Braunton Kelsey with 3-26 as hosts North Molton were restricted to 173-9. Chris Turner hit an un beaten 47 and James Tapp chipped in with 24 but then Hawkins led the Kelseymen to a seven wicket win with a top score of 67 and Tom Rowbotham hit 47.

DIVISION FIVE

Filleigh III are the new leaders of Division Five. They took over on top spot when they knocked previous leaders Nomansland off their perch with a 116 run win in a Saturday match. Dave Boyd who is a few years shy of his bus pass, carried his bat throughout the Filleigh innings, recording magnificent unbeaten 114 and Nathaniel Shervington hit 78 as the visitors racked up a healthy 246-5. James Hope then hit 43 to top score for the hosts who were bowled out for 130 with Carl Shaw taking 5-10 and Emily Ward claiming 4-22.

Heathcoat II were five wicket winners over visiting Ilfracombe who they bowled out for 150 with Will Clancy and Nick Goulty both claiming three wicket hauls. Mark Crigg (37) and Ryan Woodger (37no) were the principle run scorers for Ilfracombe but 16-year old Thompson then hit an unbeaten half century and Jamie Drew chipped in with 25 as the Knightshayes side sailed home with five wickets in hand. James Sutton picked up three of the wickets to fall.

Brian Roe top scored with 41 as Barnstaple and Pilton were held to 138-9 at Bishop Nympton. That relatively low total proved more than enough to win the game for Barum though as the home side were the bowled out for just 33 with Bobby Pedlar (5-18) and Chris Newton (4-6) doing then damage.
