FARM & COTTAGE HOLIDAYS NORTH DEVON LEAGUE – WEEK SIX
THERE was just the one top flight match played in week six but it certainly provided a headline result as Sandford suffered one of their biggest defeats in their long association with the First Division.
The Creedy Park men entertained a Bideford side who chalked up an imposing 280-7 and then hustled the hosts out for a meagre 56!
Andy Webbe’s 79 was the main individual knock in the Bideford total and then Sam Allin claimed a four wicket haul whilst Josh King and Martin Steward each bagged a brace and there was a wicket too for Dave Staddon.
DIVISION TWO
Barnstaple & Pilton march on after a fifth straight success. However, they were pushed all the way by visiting Beaford who had the chance to secure a last delivery victory in a thrilling contest.
Barum batted first and were led to 182-9 thanks to runs from Steve Moore (38), Ash Ale (30no), James Rowe (31) and Mark Metters (20) whilst Mark Lake (2-10), Alex Crisp 2-23 and Nigel Lake (2-39) took wickets.
Metters then took 3-35 and Chris Newton 3-23 as Beaford closed a single blow from victory on 177-9. The last over was sent down by Brady Saunders and it was Geoff Lake facing the final ball needing a big boundary to win it. Lake danced down the track to attempt to launch the winning hit only to be stumped and Barum claimed a thrilling win! Alex Crisp completed a fine all round effort with the top score in the reply of 63, the next best was the 28 from Ali McMillan.
There was another close encounter played out at Lynton and Lynmouth where Victoria Park were beaten by two wickets. The visitors batted first and were bowled out for 147 with Will Anderson (31) and Tim Anderson (30) the key contributors. Tristan Jones (3-28) and Connor Constable (3-44), claimed wickets for the hosts who then won on 148-8. Mind you, had it not been for the contribution of Nick Bowen, who hit an unbeaten 72 from the number five berth. It looked all over with eight wickets down and sixty plus needed for victory when Constable (20no) joined Bowen at the crease. The pair had other ideas though and took their side to a splendid victory at 148-8.
Morebath, big winners in their opening game the week before at Incorrigbles, were unable to raise an eleven for the trip to Weare Giffard and so become the latest side to suffer a minus two points from their average total for non appearance.
DIVISION THREE
There was a full programme of matches in Division Three with the top billing going to Newton Tracey II who landed a third straight win to now be the only side in the section to still sport a one hundred percent record.
Mark Cowley claimed 3-22 whilst John Brewer returned the impressive figures of 1-6 from nine overs as nine man North Devon II were bowled out for 175. Bob Heaman accounted for 83 of the Instow men’s total. Andy Chatham then hit an unbeaten 65, John Walmsley hit 69 and Graham Moore struck an unbeaten 42 as Newton Tracey strolled to victory.
Halberton suffered a first defeat of the term, going down by just four runs in a high scoring affair at Filleigh II. Jaz Kalsi struck 122; the next best was 27 from Jay Ley, as the home side were bowled out for 239. Richie Durrant (3-18), Jerry Turner (3-40) and Tim Hutchings (2-19) claimed wickets for Halberton who were once again led by the in-form Dan Coles on the run chase. Coles was finally dismissed for 73 – he now has a current average of just over 200 – but thereafter it was left to George Rowe (34) and Turner (33) to get the Mid Devon side close to the required total. The final ball saw skipper Richie Durrant facing. He needed a four to tie and a six to win and was caught on the boundary line to leave the hosts victors by four runs! Simon Prosser took 4-50 for the victors.
Bratton Fleming were 51 run winners at Holsworthy where they scored 179-5 and then bowled the home side out for 128. Paddy Dartnoll (55) and Ollie Hunt (40) scored the bulk of the visiting runs. Matt Williams took 3-25 for Holsworthy and then struck a fine 68 but the next best home offering was the 13 hit by Darren Jenkins as James Tapp worked up another head of steam to claim 5-24.
Bideford II defeated visiting Sandford II by four wickets in a low scoring affair. The Creedy Park side batted first and were bowled out for 101 with Chris Theedom (29) the only batsmen to make much of an impression as Josh Alexander (4-13) and Jay Cordon (3-19) worked well in tandem. John Weeks then hit 44 to help guide the home side to their six-wicket win. Ash Baker was the most successful Sandford bowler with 3-29.
DIVISION FOUR
There was a sparkling century from Craig Overton as North Devon III beat Braunton Kelsey by six wickets. Mark Johnson top scored with 58 as the visitors closed on a respectable 216-6 with Matt Dart claiming 2-26. Overton (111) and Dave Tribe (51) then saw the home side to a comfortable win.
There was a close encounter at Petrockstowe where Belstone claimed a two wicket win. Lee Cockwill (74) and Brendon Harris (36) were the top scorers in the home sides 197-9. Harry Bushin bagged a brace of wickets, as did Tom Fogarty. The run chase was led, and in some style too, by opener Scott Tremain who struck 112 of his sides 198-8. Such was the Tremain dominance that only two other batsmen made it into double figures with number nine bat Foggerty completing a fine all-round contribution with 23. Home skipper Nigel Cockwill claimed three wickets, son Ian bagged a brace and there were also two wickets for Richard Kelsey.
Barnstaple & Pilton II were another side not to show as they were unable to field an eleven for the game at Victoria Park and so Barum land a minus two average points penalty and Victoria Park take the twenty points for a hollow victory.
DIVISION FIVE
Mark Creek, having found cricket at the age of 50, completed his first league fifty in only his second season, at Ilfracombe on Saturday. Leading the way with 67 and supported well by Dan Brierley (32) and Nathan Townsend (36), who returned to complete his innings having been hit in the face off a top edge by Milly Squire, Ilfracombe finished on an impressive 212. Martin Brice with three wickets and Annabelle Squire with two being Filleigh's most successfull bowlers. Filleigh were never really in the hunt with Jason Newman taking three wickets, Cavanagh, Brierley and Townsend two a piece. However, special mention should go to Filleigh youngster Harrison who held the innings together finishing with a deserved 52.
