STAY IN NORTH DEVON LEAGUE
Hatherleigh stay top of the First Division after a 51-run win in a low scoring affair at Braunton.
Rob Chapman (55), Jack Cherrington (48) and Mark Lake (42) combined to help the table toppers to 184. Mark Mitchell claimed 5-40 for Braunton who were then bowled out for 133.
Henry Bedford top scored with 44 whilst Ian Roberts hit 39 before he was struck by a Rob Mutch delivery that cannoned off his glove up onto his chin necessitating in a number of stitches being applied at hospital!
Filleigh made it three wins from three with a ten wicket triumph at home to Bideford. Only James Ford (39) could make any progress for the visitors as Filleigh’s Martin Brice claimed the remarkable figures of 4-1 from 7.3 overs! Jamie Palmer chipped in with 3-38 as Bideford were bowled out for 140. Jaz Kalsi (67no) and Rob Collier (51no) then combined to see their side to a comfortable win.
Sandford bagged a second successive victory with a 60 run success at Newton Tracey. Ryan Glass (95) and Russell Discombe (91) helped the Mid Devon men to 300. Shaun Hawkins then claimed 4-63 as the home side were bowled out for 240 with Phil Steward top scoring with 51.
Halberton won the top-of-the-table Division Two game inflicting a first defeat of the term on Beaford whilst also maintaining their one hundred per cent record. Greg Maher thumped a 69-ball 122 and James Mayes chipped in with 73 whilst there was another delightful cameo from youngster Harry Everett who was unbeaten on 22 as the Mid Devon side closed on 286-9. Andy James (4-49) and Alex Crisp (3-46) were the principle wicket takers for Beaford who were then bowled out for 178. Steve James was the only visiting batsmen to prosper with a knock of 47 as Richie Durrant (4-29), Nick Dean (3-39) and Adrian Hills (2-16) claimed the wickets.
Heathcoat are the only other one hundred percent side in the second tier after they beat Victoria Park by 106 runs at Knightshayes. Chris Small (58) and Dillon Penberthy (42) scored the runs as the Mid Devon team closed on 231. Rikki Kelly picked up four wickets for the visiting side who were then bowled out for 125 with only Colin Bettis (31) making much of an impression. Dom Bess was the architect in chief of Park’s downfall as he claimed 6-23.
Lynton and Lynmouth suffered a third straight defeat, beaten by 79 runs at Incorrigibles. The Witheridge based side batted first and were bowled out for 160. Ed Reader (46) and Ryan Bowden (41) were the principle scorers as Alex Spice took 3-22. However, that score was more than enough as only Tristan Jones (33) made much headway. Much of that was down to a big slice of girl power as Melanie Vaggers took 3-9 with some splendid seam bowling and there were three wickets also for James Hope (3-18) as Lynton were bundled out for 81.
Holsworthy hold the high ground in Division Three and they still sport a perfect record after a third straight success, thumping visiting Newton Tracey II by 220 runs. Darren Jenkin (88), Sam Hocking (86) and Ryan Walter (69) saw the home team to 340-9. Andy Chatham claimed 3-54 and 14-year-old Sean O’Brien picked up 3-80 for Newton Tracey who were then bowled out for 120 with Chatham’s 41 the best batting contributions. Ryan Walter completed a fine all-round effort with 5-14.
Belstone recorded their second win of the season with a ten-wicket victory at Bideford II where they restricted the home side to 183-6. Ben Brend (58) was the only home batsman to prosper and then Scott Tremayne (95no) and Phil Woods (54no) saw their side to a big win.
Bratton Fleming won a close encounter at North Devon II where Patrick Crane top scored with 59 as the visitors were bowled out for 211. Tom Ansell took 3-28 and then top scored with 71 in the run chase. However, the only other notable home offering was one of 45 from Bob Heaman as the final wicket fell on 198 to consign the Instow side to a 13-run defeat.
Barnstaple & Pilton II are the Division Four leaders after they were 27 run winners in a high scoring affair at home to Ilfracombe. Barum were led to 245-8 by Frankie Biederman (53) and David Orr (50), whilst Andrew Barton hit what would prove to be an invaluable unbeaten 14 at the end of the innings. Jamie Sutton and Nathan Townsend both claimed three wicket hauls for the visitors who closed the reply on 218-7. Mark Creek (36no) was the top individual offering whilst Paul Schiller (3-530, James Thomas (2-35) and Mark Jarvis all claimed wickets for Barum.
North Molton landed another win and they sit second in Division Four after a 190 run home win over North Devon III. Rob Ayre (96) and Dominic Ford (56) led the home side to 279-4. Only Sam Witheridge made much impression for the visitors with 32 as George Long-Howell (3-28) and Will Boyles (3-15) operated in tandem to bowl them out for 89.
There was a stunning one-handed catch on the boundary by Westleigh’s James Tythcott that lit up the home game against Heathcoat II. The Mid Devon side batted first and were bowled out for 175 with James Cridland’s 56 the only meaningful offering. James Corry (4-28) and Luke Purkiss (2-52) amongst the wickets. Purkiss then top scored with 51 and Lee Farrant (33) and Mike Merrick (32no) made contributions as the hosts got home with five wickets to play with.
In Division Five Newton Tracey II were 42 run winners over Victoria Park II in a Saturday encounter, and it was very much down to a couple of their younger generation. Sean O’Brien (38) and Joe Totterdell (32) put on 73 for the sixth wicket, a feat made all the more impressive given that they are both a tender 14-years-of-age! The partnership enabled the home side to close on 166. Totterdell then claimed 4-12 in six overs to help bowl the visitors out for 124.
James Tierney-Jones took 6-35 for Dulverton to bowl visiting Nomansland out for 156. Steve Kelland (74no) and Lee Hooper (64no) then combined to see the league’s newest members to a ten-wicket triumph.
Bishop Nympton were 48 run winners at Bratton Fleming where they closed on 213-8 and then bowled then hosts out for 165. Toby Lockhead top scored with 43 for Nympton whilst Max Elis claimed 4-41 for the home side. Colin Welch led the reply with 49, but the visitors were good value for their win, led over the line by Steve Cockram with 4-15.
James Roe top scored with an unbeaten 81 to guide Barnstaple & Pilton III to a five wicket win at Hatherleigh II. Jack Barkwill (61) and Steve Miles (52) had earlier led the home team to 180. Stephen Glover (4-36) was the pick of the Barum bowlers.
