Torquay spending weekend in nets raising cash

How the new nets at Torquay Recreation Ground will look.

TORQUAY’S fund-raising drive for a new £80,000 net at their Recreation Ground home spins into action this weekend.

The old concrete-based nets alongside the pavilion on the Kings Drive side of the ground are showing their age and replacing them has become a priority.

The club plans to build an ECB-accredited multi-use training facility incorporating a fully enclosed all-weather playing surface and four retractable nets allowing superior and flexible training opportunities.

Fittingly, the first fund-raiser is a sponsored net session – a marathon 24-hour, non-stop bowl and batathon in the sports hall at Torquay Boys’ Grammar School.

The first ball will be bowled around 5pm.

“Everyone is welcome – players, supporters, committee – as long as they bring a donation,” said organiser Joe Thompson.

“We already have around £1,000 pledged and if all goes well we could raise between £4-5,000 over the weekend.

“Our intention is to keep going through the night, helped by pizza delivery from Dominos.

“The club’s aim is to have the nets open in time for the new season in May.

“The work will take about a month and will start just as soon as the rugby players move off that part of the ground.”

Other fund-raising events include a Spring Ball at the Grand Hotel as well as grant aid and donations from club members.
