NEW nets and improved dressing rooms and toilets have been opened by Exmouth in their biggest development scheme for 20 years.East Devon MP Hugo Swire and town mayor John Humphries were among the guests invited to the official opening of the new facilities.
Devon Cricket Board chairman Jim Wood, a former Exmouth player, chairman and now president, cut the ceremonial ribbon.
Representatives of Viridor Credits Environmental Company and the England and Wales Cricket Trust, who came up with substantial grants toward the costs, were among the guests.
Mr Swire and the mayor were then tempted to show their skills with the bat against the colts’ bowling machine.
The new nets provide three high-quality bays and a throw down area.
They were constructed by ClubTurf and replaced old nets laid in 1994 and opened during Devon’s NatWest Trophy game against Yorkshire the Maer that summer.
Martyn Moxon, the Yorkshire and England opener, joined Exmouth’s then president Dame Mary Bridges to carry out the opening.
Richard Butler, the current Exmouth chairman, said: ”This is a tremendous boost for the club and will hopefully help develop many future generations of young cricketers.
“In particular we want to target local schools who have been very supportive of the scheme.”
A second plaque was unveiled at the pavilion where a new state of the art heating system, new showers, a disabled toilet and umpires’ room have been provided.
These developments were provided by Whitescape and funded through Sport England’s Olympic Lottery Fund.
Much of the decoration was carried out by club volunteers.
