White takes over from Murphy as Budleigh skip

BUDLEIGH Salterton will be under new management in the A Division next season following the resignation of skipper Joel Murphy.

Murphy, who took over in 2012 from Sandy Allen, decided not to stand for the captaincy in 2015.

The new captain is Lloyd White, who will be stepping up from leading the 2nd XI to promotion into Premier Two last summer.

White’s replacement as 2nd XI skipper is Alex Richardson. Both appointments were made following a vote by the players.

Neil Rice, the Budleigh Salterton chairman, said White (pictured, below) was the obvious choice to take over having proved himself in the 2nd XI.

“Lloyd has been with the club since he was a colt and had he made himself available for the 1st XI would have played a lot more,” said Rice.

“Although Joel is staying on as a player next season, the rest of the side is going to be aged in the early 20s.

“Ben Phillips has indicated he won’t be playing cricket due to his commitments coaching the Somerset Academy and age-group sides.

“James Burke has accepted a two-year deal with Surrey and I can’t see him featuring for us at all.

“And I doubt Luke Peterson will be returning as our overseas player, although we would be more than happy to have him.

“He is big mates with James (Burke) and if he comes over from South Africa again I expect the to of them will link up with a club near London.

“Our first task over the coming weeks and months is to recruit some experienced bowling. We have a few irons in the fire, locally and further afield.”
