Passenger just the ticket for Torquay

TORQUAY have asked Ben Passenger to have a second stint as captain exactly 10 years after he last did the job.

Passenger, who will be 37 when the new season gets under way in May, had three years in change between 2001-2003.

The dual responsibility of captaining the 1st XI and the Torquay Athletic 1st XV as well proved too much of a task and in 2004 Passenger took a step back from cricket.

Passenger’s serious rugby days are over now – the odd social game apart – and he is free to devote himself to cricket again.

That was good news for Torquay, who lost former skipper Justin Yau at the end of the 2012 season after he was appointed to a new job in London.

Yau led the side for four seasons, steering Torquay back into the top flight after they had been relegated from the Premier Division in 2009 for the first time in their history.

Passenger is saying little about his reappointment, which was the obvious one for Torquay to make given the youthful make up of their side.

“It will be a challenge,” said Passenger, who knows Torquay only avoided relegation by 11 points last season and will be on the shortlist to struggle again.

Passenger’s appointment was confirmed at the club’s annual meeting, which also rubber stamped Matt Thompson’s role as vice-captain.

There are other changes off the field with Dennis Brewer replacing Steve Craig as chairman.

Craig stood down at the end of last season after 14 years in the chair. His service to the club was acknowledged at the meeting by a presentation.

Peter Hunt is the new vice-chairman with Simon Rice taking over as treasurer. Ken Jeffrey remains as secretary, glad to have shaken off the treasurer’s job as well.

Torquay will be rejoining the midweek Pro-Direct Torbay T20 competition this season after a break of several years.

Meanwhile, indoor nets have started for the junior section with Joe Thompson in charge. New players in all age groups are welcome. Contact Thompson on 07823 330037 for details.
