Simpson wants to see more application from batters

SHOBROOKE skipper Chris Simpson wants to see some more application from his batters in future after a 50-run loss to new boys Ipplepen.

Pens were held to 153 for nine which looked well within reach for Shobrooke.

There were two wickets each for Peter Turner and Simpson – and three for South African newboy Dylan Blignaut (3-29).

Jack Lewis (38) and Adam Peters (29) were then main run getters for Ipplepen.

John James’ 29 was as good as it got for Shobrooke, who were bowled out for 103.

Three wickets each for Pens’ veterans Keith Wakeham and Alan Boon – a last-minute replacement in the side – and two for Jack Wylie stopped Park in their tracks.

“The batting was very disappointing with some loose shots, although John James toughed it out for a while,” said Simpson.

“Hopefully the boys will learn from this week and bat a lot better next week.”

Simpson was kinder to the bowlers, saying: “Off-spinner Tom Youngmam, playing his first game,  showed he can handle first-team cricket.

“Dylan looked sharp up front.”

Pens captain Keith Wakeham was pleased to get off the mark with a win, but claimed his side can do better.

“We won without really hiting our straps and there is definitely room for improvement,” said Wakeham.

“A bit more patience with the bat is needed. We batted as if we were on a 250 pitch and got 150 when 180-190 was about par.”

Shobroke entertain Plymstock this Saturday.
