Plymstock hovering over danger zone

PLYMSTOCK are hovering one place above the B Division relegation area after losing by 51 runs at Barnstaple.

Barum’s total of 218 all out was respectable rather than stiff, but Plymstock got nowhere near it.

Skipper James Nichols (31) flogged 17 in an over from James Russell near the end to trim the deficit, but by then the game had got away.

Nichols may have done his bit, but not for the first time this season decent support and a smidgen of luck was missing.

“It was the lack of partnerships again as 218 was very getable, but we needed a platform to go from,” said Nichols.

“There was some pretty ordinary umpiring in which we lost Dean Fulco on 42 when we were comfortable - and I'm hoping we get that rub of the green too later in the season.

“Our bowling and fielding was tidy, but we need to work harder at the smaller aspects of the game, like stopping quick singles when the opposition are batting and trying to run them when we are.

“I know the guys hate losing and will be working hard again this week to put it right.

“Five games in there's no need to panic, there's plenty of time to get good results and get on a roll.”

Barnstaple got to 110 for two with the Popham brothers – Jack (62) and Tom (42) in the runs with the fomer batting in with George McEndoo before he was seventh out at 197.

Tom teWhare (4-45) was the pick of the Plymstock bowlers, backed up by Nichols.

Plymstock got behind the clock after losing Fulco, who had on 47 for the third wicket with Jason Williams (20).

Steve Moore (4-15), James Thomas (3-21) and Jack Popham (2-31) all kept it tight as the run-rate climbed from improbable to impossible despite Nichols' late thrash.
