Exmouth go top following run-rate win

EXMOUTH hit the top of the Premier Division after beating Cornwood by six wickets on run-rate.

Matt Webb took four for 21 and there were two wickets each for Andy Buzza and Trevor Anning as Cornwood were sent packing for 69.

Without Matt Skeemer’s 25 and 11 at the end from Duncan Boase, it would have been an even sorrier

After an interruption for rain when they were 61 for four, Exmouth did their sums and came up with one run needed to win.

The weather cleared, the sides went out to resume play and a Cornwood’s Matt Butterworth bowled a wide, which ended the match

There was some confusion after the match whether the result was valid due to an unclear rulebook clause implying a second innings must last 20 overs for run-rate to be used.

A league spokesman confirmed this morning (Monday) that the result will stand.

League officials can expect protests from clubs who have previously been denied wins in similar circumstances.

Sidmouth, who were top and may still be, were rained off against Sandford.

There was no play at Exeter, where Torquay were due to visit, or between Heathcoat and Plymouth.

North Devon played to a finish against visiting Bovey Tracey – and thanks to a blistering spell from Tom Allin then emerged as 76-run winners.

Max Curtis made 39 and Allin a brisk 38 in North Devon’s 30-over total of 146 for six. Nathan Roberts took three for 29 for Bovey.

Bovey’s early order was shot away by Allin, who took six wickets for six runs in five overs. Only Peter Bradley (24) resisted.

When Chris Bradley was run out Bovey were 65 for eight having lost seven wickets for 36 runs.

Matt Westaway (2-27) returned for a second spell to mow down the tail-enders, leaving Malcolm Lake stranded on 23 not out.
