Premier 2nd XI round up

LEADERS Plymouth crushed Cornwood by 211 runs in a one-sided affair at Mount Wise.

The early Premier 2nd XI leaders rattled along to 304 for eight with Jake Luffman leading the way with 90 off 74 balls.

Ben Stein (54) and Harry Stephenson (33) got early runs then Luffman and Rob Button (45) kept the scoreboard clattering along.

Cornwood were all out for 93 in just 27.3 overs – skipper Dave Tall hitting 31 against one of his former clubs.

The wickets were shared around with three for Sam Stein and two each for Jack Hughes, Button and Martin Gill, who bowled eight balls for no runs at the end.

Exeter proved too strong for youthful Budleigh Salterton in a 115-run rout at the County Ground.

Budleigh skipper Ian Taylor was stranded on 47 not out when he ran out of batting partners with the score on 110.

There were compensations though in the form of generous comments from Exeter 2nd XI skipper Richard Nelsey, who was impressed by Budleigh youngster Joe Marley.

“It looks like Ian was up against it getting a side out, but the young lads he brought in all tried hard,” said Nelsey.

“The young leg-spinner, Joe Marley, bowled really well for his five wickets and looks like a fine prospect for the future.

“Sam Conway rode his luck for his 28, but when you are nine for three as they were I guess you will try anything!”

Sean Langford (45), Adam Fradgley (39) and Nelsey (32) were all among the runs for Exeter in a total of 225 for eight.

Steve Milne (3-15) and Peter Hensor (3-41) provided the firepower to knock Budleigh over.

Mark Jasper produced a devastating spell of bowling to speed Sidmouth on their way to a 64-run win at Hatherleigh.

Sidmouth’s total of 179 all out looked modest enough and was down largely to Greg Chaplin (55) and Fionn Wardrop (46), who put on 75 for the fourth wicket.

Sean Leatheren (4-43) had the best bowling figures, backed up by Nick Rogers with three for 47 and home captain Ross Cherrington, whose 15-over spell yielded a cheap two for 36.

Hatherleigh were king along nicely with Jack Cherrington (31) in command, then slumped from 32 for none to 40 for five as Jasper got to work.

Only Rogers (25) resisted long as Declan Lines (3-15) and Wardrop (2-22) sent Hatherleigh tumbling to defeat.

Bovey Tracey made it two wins out of two in the Premier 2nd XI with a two-wicket scrape home job against visiting Plympton.

Skipper James Mason led the way with the ball with four for 33 as Bovey dismissed Plympton for 167.

Ex-Devon player Phil Arnold fired 56 on his return to active service with Bovey Tracey and Jamie Grey chipped in with 22.

Victory leaves Bovey two points behind Plymouth, whom they meet this Saturday at Mount Wise.

Paignton were not far away on the chase in a high-scoring draw against North Devon.

Ollie Hunt top scored with 69 in a useful North Devon total of 241 for four. Hunt featured in stands of 92 for the first wicket with Bob Heaman (27) and 58 for the second with Matt Knapman (65).

Knapman went on to make 57 for the fourth wicket with Ali Ashworth (29no).

Paignton must still be wondering how they didn’t win the match after getting to 1119 for three with 20 overs to go.

Steve George (46) and Jason Woodcock got the Paignton chase going with a partnership of 57 for the second wicket, then George and Ollie Higgs (72no) racked up 86 more.

Despite former Devon all-rounder Tim Ward making 49 as well, North Devon got the brake on just in time.

Paignton got down to the last over thinking they needed 23 to win, although the real target was 18. Five penalty runs added for the ball hitting a stray helmet on the field had not been added on.

Whatever the target should or should not have been, Paignton came up short with a total of 236 for six.
