PREMIER 2nd XI
DEPLETED Exeter – their side had been plundered to plug holes in the 1st XI – gave Plymouth a scare before losing by 66 runs in the top-of-the-table clash on the County Ground.
Leaders Plymouth posted 209 for eight in their 50 overs – and at 119 for five in reply Exeter were more than in touch.
The fall of the sixth wicket at 134 sparked a terminal collapse to 143 all out, which wasn’t what Exeter really deserved.
Nevertheless, Exeter captain Richard Nelsey had nothing but praise for his patched-together side, and in particular young spinner James Reddick.
“Plymouth knew they had been in a game and had we taken a draw from it that wouldn’t have been too hard on them,” said Nelsey.
“You can only play with what you have and we went with a few surprise selections. James Reddick, who is only 13, bowled 14 overs straight through for figures of four for 46 and looked totally at home.
“He will be one to watch out for in a year or two.”
Harry Kumar top scored for Exeter with 62. Earlier, Ben Stein hit 52 for Plymouth, sharing a stand of 69 with Rob Button.
DEFENDING champions Sidmouth failed to cash in on Exeter’s defeat and snatch second for themselves as they lost by two wickets in the derby clash with Budleigh Salterton.
Dan Powell (44) and Matt Hewer put on 55 for the first wicket, but there was a lack of support after they went as Sidmouth faded to 172 all out.
Ian Taylor led the bowling effort with four for 41, aided an abetted by Matt Plowman and Joe Marley with three each.
Openers Lloyd White (84) and Eliot Rice (38) had beaten Paignton on their own seven days earlier – and at 137 without loss looked like doing it again!
Charlie Dibble (5-21) forced a breakkthough and followed it up with three in quick succession, but Nathan Bright stuck around to make 20 not out and Budleigh won with more than three overs to spare.
BOVEY Tracey snatched a four-run win over Paignton in a game that swung this way and that before reaching a thrilling conclusion.
Bovey – two for none after losing Richard Wyatt-Haines and Guy Paxman early on to Terry Farkins (3-60) recovered to make 210 for eight.
Young Ed Woolcott made 28, but the big stand was one of 112 for the third wicket between Richard Longstreet (67) and James Mason (32no).Andy Bishop made 31 not out.
Paignton ran into all sorts of problems against Mason (4-46) and Ben Roberts (3-67) and at 82 for six were heading for an early exit.
Callum Stanley (43) and Ben Luck (48) had other ideas and put on 73 to get Paignton back in the game at 155 for seven.
The chase continued with Mike Meech (22) getting Paignton within six runs of victory. Bishop (2-36) whipped out Meech, which left last man Chris Smith as Paignton’s last hope.
Longstreet trapped Smith lbw to give Bovey victory.
ANDY Bennett stroked a match-turning 55 as Hatherleigh defeated North Devon by four wickets to claim their first league win of the season.
North Devon recovered from an unimpressive 130 for eight to reach 201 all out thanks to a ninth-wicket partnership of 65 between Robert Mann (39no) and Billy Curtis. Earlier, Richard Screech (26) and Max Curtis (29) where the main run getters.
Ian Cockwill (3-38) and former North Devon medium-pacer Gary Chatham (2-55) did the initial damage with the ball.
Hatherleigh went off like a train with Cockwill (35) and Mike Jones (52) posting 73 up front.
Bennett and Jack Cherrington (40) knocked off most of the rest in a partnership worth 79.
JAMIE Pfeiffer returned to torment his former club with runs and wickets as Plympton beat Cornwood by three wickets in the Oak Park derby.
Cornwood made 175 for nine having got away to an 88-run start between Dave Tall (51) and Ryan Rickard. Will Caulfield helped the score along with 26.
Pfeiffer (3-33) had early wickets with Matt Gregory blasting out the stragglers.
Pfeiffer then stroked 54 to keep the Plympton chase motoring along. Lee Mundell (20) and Sean Smith (20) chipped in too.
