SIDMOUTH
picked up 20 points to stay top of the Premier 2nd XI without having to play as
bottom side Tavistock cried off.
A
combination of holidays and first team call offs meant Tavistock only had 10
men on the team sheet – and two of them failed to turn up at the meeting point.
“There was
no point travelling with eight so we called the game off,” said a Tavistock
spokesman.
Second-placed
Exeter remain hard on Sidmouth’s heels just eight points behind after beating
Paignton by five wickets at Queens Park.
Paignton
were in all sorts of trouble at 48 for six after an early going over from Drew
Smith (7-48), but with Tim Ward making 43 and Liam Talbot 31 they recovered to
145 all out.
Aussie
Smith has been playing in the 3rd XI all season as only one overseas player is
allowed per team – and Dion Bulner has been the first choice.
The roles
were reversed for the Paignton game with Bulner dropping into the 3rd XI, where
he scored an unbeaten century against Kentisbeare! Selection is going to be
interesting this week…
Exeter had
58 overs to knock off the runs and got there with ease. Sean Langford (43) and
Graham White (31) put on 60 for the second wicket then Richard Nelsey (25)
helped finish things off.
Callum
Stanley (3-36) was the pick of the bowlers for Paignton.
Ollie Dawe
picked up four for 27 as Exmouth dismissed Plympton for 138 – Ben Vince to
scoring on 26. Exmouth were 50 for three when rain stopped play.
Plymouth
2nd XI felt they were in a commanding position against Cornwood at Oak Park
when their game was called off.
Scott
Mansfield made 91, but only Will Caulfield (20) did anything else significant
as Tom (4-44) and Jack Hughes (2-19) shot the Corns out for 152.
Plymouth
were 98 for four in reply with George Stephenson on 38 not out.
North Devon
suffered a 60-run beating at Bovey Tracey in one of the few games to go the
distance.
Kiwi Phil
Barraclough (54) and James Fulner (31) were Bovey’s main run makers in a total
of 177 for nine. There were three wickets each for JayCorden and Jason Hayes.
Only Hayes
(30) and Richard Screech (37) made much headway in reply as James Mason (3-26)
and Mark Gribble (2-28) skittled North Devon for 117 in reply.
