BEN Stein can expect an immediate recall to Plymouth’s 1st XI after smashing 182 for the 2nd XI while his erstwhile colleagues in the senior side were losing to Exmouth at Mount Wise.

Stein was left out of the 1st XI after a run of modest scores – and promptly vented his frustrations on Exmouth’s second-string attack.

While the 1st team were going down by101 runs at home – James Toms top scoring with 61 as they were being bowled out for 168 chasing 270 to win – Stein was smashing it all around the seafront ground at Exmouth.

Having taken 71 balls to make his first 50, Stein went to his ton in 40 more deliveries, reached 150 just 33 balls later and got to 182 in another 23 balls. He hit 23 fours and two sixes – that’s 104 in boundaries – and was last man out in a total of 277.

The 2nd XI went on to win by 132 runs – skipper Rob Button taking four for 33.

Premier leaders Exeter overwhelmed Plympton by 98 runs – and had skipper Richard Nelsey to thanks for getting them out of trouble.

Exeter were 139 for eight after a going over from Dan Vince (3-49) and Dan Hawker (2-42), but recovered to 180 for eight thanks to Nelsey’s 55 not out and a helping hand from Pete Hensor.

Plympton slumped to 35 for five in reply – Tchepo Legodi (2-13) and Steve Milne (3-15) doing the early damage – and were spun out for 82 by Matt Williamson (5-30).

Paignton made Sidmouth work all the way for a two-wicket win on the Fortfield.

There were three wickets each for Will Sobczak and Fionn Wardropp as Paignton stumbled to 181 for nine – a stand of 67 for the sixth wicket between Jason Woodcock (43) and Dan Wolf was vital to setting a total.

Mike Smith (5-64) and Terry Farkins (2-48) had Sidmouth worrying at 160 for eight with Sobczak (35) and Jamie Wardrop (29) long gone, but Greg Chaplin (22no) and Nick Mansfield (4no) got the over the line.

Bovey Tracey and Cornwood fought each other to a standstill in a game which ended tied.

Cornwood’s Matt Skeemer – grandson of league president and Chudleigh stalwart Graham Shears was the main run-getter for Cornwood with 105 in their total of 194.

James Mason and Mark Gribble shared six of the wickets to fall.

Theo Holland (36) and Tom Dyer got Bovey down to the last over from Robin Dart (5-30) needing six to win – and Dyer hit the first ball for four.

Bovey could only scramble a bye from the remaining five balls and closed on 194 for nine.

North Devon cruised to a five-wicket win at Tavistock after Simon Wright (5-65) and Robert Mann (3-13) bundled the home side out for 98.

Scott Amos (40) led the run-chase, which was wrapped up well before 6pm.
