PREMIER DIVISION 2nd XI
PAIGNTON eased their relegation fears at the bottom of the Premier Division 2nd XI table when they defeated fellow strugglers Hatherleigh by 23 runs.
Runs were hard to come by from start to finish and Paignton would have been in deep trouble themselves without former 1st XI captains Tim Ward and Mark Grifiths getting them off the hook.
Ward made 22 and Griffiths 36 as Paignton recovered from 53 for four to 111 for six after a going over from Rob Cockwill (2-34), Nicholas Scott-Rogers (2-41) and Ross Cherrington (2-34).
The tail didn’t hang around long, which left Hatherleigh a target of 135 to win.
At 38 for six Hatherlegh were out of it. Scott-Rogers made 18, but only Cherrington managed double figures as Connor Ashworth (4-24) and Adam Williams (4-34) shot out Hatherleigh for 111.
Hatherleigh remain in the bottom two 20 points clear of Cornwod but with 14 to make up on Plympton to reach safety. Paignton are a further four points in front.
Rob Hearn and Richard Screech both made runs as North Devon cruised to a five-wicket win over Plympton.
Tim Cooke picked up five wickets for 50 runs as Plympton cobbled together 214 for eight in 50 overs.
Sean Smith (41) and Neil Tremayne (19) gave Plympton a 60-run start, then Callum Cload (53no) and Hallam Kerton (51) added 44 for the sixth wicket.
A stand of 50 for the second wicket between Paul Heard (24) and Screech (66no) for North Devon to 129 for two in reply.
Hearn chipped in with 35 while Mart Dart (12no) and Screech added 60 unbroken to win it.
North Devon go to Paignton this Saturday while Hatherleigh are at Sidmouth.
EXETER remain second in the table 20 points behind leaders Plymouth after taking a winning draw off Sidmouth at the County Ground.
Harri Kumar whacked a top score of 83 as Exeter totalled 237 for eight. Sidmouth were hanging on at 201 for nine when the overs ran out.
One more wicket - Charlie Dibble (21) and Andy Green were the batters who frustrated Exeter for nine overs – would have won the game.
Exeter skipper Richard Nelsey said it wasn’t the last-pair who were the stumbling block to victory, but the inability to finish of Sidmouth when they had the chance.
“We had them 128 for six when Matt Hewer (44) was out and that was when we should have turned the screw on them,” said Nelsey.
“To be fair they have some experienced players down the order, like Charlie Dibble and Mark Jasper, and if you let them settle they will hang around.”
Kumar and Alex Bosomworth (43) were Exeter’s main run getters and contributed 88 for the third wicket. Charlie Myles (3-36) and Jasper (2-31) were the pick of the bowlers.
Myles (39), Will Sobcjak (42) and Hewer all made runs before Sidmouth were slowed up.
Jake Reddick had a lot to do with getting the brake on with figures of five for 33 from 15 overs of leg spin – not bad for a 13 year old!
BOVEY Tracey remain fourth in the Premier table after thrashing Cornwood by 123 runs.
Aren deYoung led the way for Bovey with 90 not out as they totted up 259 all out.
Sam Thomas (55) made early runs then de Young went in at 89 for three and batted through to the close. Sam Wyatt-Haines chipped in with 23.
Cornwood were all out for 136 in reply with young Matt Skeemer (34) the leading scorer.
Thomas capped a fine game with three wickets for 11 runs and there were two each for skipper James Mason and Vivek Kulkarni on his return to Bovey from South Devon CC.
Budleigh Salterton held on for a draw against leaders Plymouth after finding a target of 316 to win rather daunting!
There was no respite for Budleigh as Plymouth lashed the bowling around with Ben Stein leading the way with 82.
Stein and Ben Fererro (48) put on 90 for the first wicket then Rob Button (55) added 96 more with Stein for the second.
Harry Kandampully (57) and Keith Barlow bashed it around some more in a quick stand of 45.
Budleigh bowers James Leat (4-60) and Adam Conway (3-69) stuck to their task and were rewarded with wickets late on.
Ian Taylor (65) and Conway (24) got Budleigh up to 76 for two, but maintaining the asking rate was hard while Button (3-31) and Kandampully (3-41) wheeled away.
Last pair Adam Jones and Joe Marley shuttered up for the final three overs as Budleigh reached 160 for nine.
