TONY PRYCE DEVON CUP - QUARTER-FINALS
YOUNGSTER George Yates showed why Paignton rate him so highly with a six-wicket haul to knock Plympton out of the Tony Pryce Sports Devon Cup.Stephen George (3-14) and Yates got stuck into Plympton early on at Queens Park as they slumped to 68 for six.
Ross Farrer (34) and Keith Donohue (30) put on 49 by way of a fightback, but the reappearance of Yates and George ended Plympton’s resistance.
Yates finished with six for 49 as Plympton were dismissed for 149 with more than five of their 40 overs to go.
“We don’t see as much of George as we would like as he is away at Millfield School during the early part of the season,” said Paignton skipper Mike Pedley.
“Definitely one for the future if nurtured right and we are keen to help him develop some more this season.”
Paignton made an inauspicious start as they were 21 for two with openers Mark Smith and George both back in the hutch.
Brad Rasool (49) and Conor Bryan (35) took the score up to 97, then fell one after the other.
Rob Shergold went caught and bowled as 97 for two became 102 for five in a hurry.
Mark Gilmour (33no) stopped the rot with George Benton, to take Paignton within one run of victory.
Skipper Mike Pedley hit the winning runs with a boundary.
Also through are Bradninch, who humbled 10-man and depleted Exeter by nine-wicket in a one-sided affair at Kensham Park.
James Street (23) and last man Pat Steward (13) were the only Exeter batters to make double figures in a total of 67 all out. Eliot Acton had four for 12 and Gary Chappell two for nine.
Acton went with the score on three, but the rest of the runs were knocked off by Richart Saaiman (30) and Haydn Murray (20) without mishap in just 9.5 overs.
Still outstanding in the quarter-final are matches between Cornwood and Tavistock (July 18) and Bovey Tracey and Sidmouth (25th).
