Former Devon League umpire dies aged 57

ONE of the most popular umpires on the Devon League circuit died suddenly in March this year, shortly after moving back to Devon to live.

Mike Rawle emigrated to Malta nearly 10 years ago with second wife Joyce, after taking early retirement from the Devon Ambulance Service.

He died barely six weeks after moving back to Devon.

Rawle, who was 57 last December was brought up in Exmouth and attended Exmouth Community College.

He spent most of his adult life in the ambulance service – and his spare time on the cricket and rugby fields of Devon.

During the summer months Rawle was a virtual ever-present on the umpiring circuit – and when he didn’t have a game he would be watching Bovey Tracey in action.

From September to March he switched loyalties to Newton Abbot RFC where, as a member of St John Ambulance, he provided match-day first aid cover for players and supporters.

A paramedic by day, he was also an active volunteer in the St John movement.

He once played the part of Mother Goose in a charity Christmas pantomime put on by St John.

Not long after moving to Malta, Mike got involved with the local St John organisation as their recruitment officer.

He continued to umpire cricket matches and in 2008 was appointed to the ICC European Panel representing Malta.

His first appointment was in Germany at an U17 tournament.

When news of his death broke, tributes poured in from all over the world.

Andy Wakefield, ex-Bovey and Buckfastleigh cricketer, said: “It was not long ago he shook his head when I asked for an lbw and raised his finger when I missed a straight one.

“A true gent if ever there was one.” George Gribble, who as chairman of Bovey Tracey encouraged Mike to joining the club, said: “He loved cricket and the club and would do anything for it as he could not bear to be idle.

“He had only recently moved back to Devon and I was looking forward to catching up with him again this summer.”
