TORQUAY CC have signed a three-year deal with TOR2 to look after their seafront ground.

Club members, led by Ian Western, have worked hard over the past eight years to maintain and improve the wicket at the Recreation Ground.

Torquay president Rob Dickinson is among the committed volunteers who helped Western in his task.

At the end of last season Western decided it was time to call it a day.

“Rob and I have really enjoyed all the work that goes into preparing a pitch and putting a match on, but it’s time to step back,” said Western.

“I am looking forward to enjoying the cricket this summer.”

Dennis Brewer, the club chairman, said finding someone inside the club to replace Western wasn’t easy.

“Amateur sports clubs are increasingly finding it very difficult to maintain the high level of volunteering and the skills required to maintain pitches and cricket squares,” said Brewer.

“Our strategy was to find a partner that we could rely upon to guarantee and maintain the green keeping skills required to produce a high-quality wicket now and in the future.

“This three-year agreement will allow us to concentrate on our cricket performance.”

The club competitively tendered the work. What stood out for the club was TOR2’s professionalism, skilled staff and commercial approach.

Peter Woodhead, the general manager for TOR2, said his company looked forward to showing what they could do.

“TOR2 are delighted to be working In partnership with TCC,” said Woodhead.

“While the club concentrates on its cricket performance, our professional groundsmen can maintain the pitches.

“This is a wonderful opportunity for us to showcase our green-keeping skills.”

TOR2 is a joint venture between Torbay Council, which owns the Recreation Ground and leases it to the cricket club, and Keir Group.

Keir Group is responsible for what used to be thought of as council services, such as waste collection, parks and open spaces, beach maintenance, highways and fleet maintenance.
