DEVON Cricket staff Matt Theedom and Scott Chappell are going ‘End-to-End’ to raise money for two charitable causes.
Cricket development manager Theedom (left) and Chappell, the community coach for South Devon, are saddling up to ride the John O’Groats to Land’s End cycle trail.
The pair will be ditching their whites and donning skin-tight cycling kit to tackle the 14-day marathon which will take them around 1,000 miles.
The beneficiaries of the tide are Prostate Cancer UK and the Devon Youth Cricket Foundation. The fund-raising target is £10,000.
The Devon Youth Cricket Foundation is a charitable trust with the aims of:
Helping more children to play and enjoy the great game of cricket
Helping the talented to become future stars of the game
Supporting programmes and projects that help players up to the age of 17 in Devon
Prostate Cancer UK fights to help more men survive prostate cancer and enjoy a better quality of life. Their priorities are:
Supporting men and providing information
Finding answers by funding research
Leading change to raise awareness and improve care
Chappell and Theedom are due to set off on August 26 from the top of Scotland and expect to arrive at Land’s End on September 8.
To save money there won’t be a support vehicle, just the intrepid cyclists and their machines.
“We know it will be incredibly hard work, but we are cycling for two very worthwhile charities,” said Chappell (pictured, right)
“The Devon Youth Cricket Foundation is close to both of our hearts because of the work we do.
“The foundation do an amazing job supporting young players across Devon to either access the game for the first time or develop their talents further.”
The Theedom family has had to deal with prostate cancer, which is why Matt wants to support the charity that works to fight it.
“Cricket is still a largely male dominated sport and therefore has a large number of men who have been or will be affected by prostate cancer,” said Theedom.
“We hope our cycle will generate more awareness among men and help raise funding towards the aims of the charity.
“We are looking for support when we get to Devon, so anyone interested in cycling with us could join for a day or two, or even the whole thing if they are really keen.”
