RICHARD Ashworth’s hundred steered the Devon Dumplings to a crushing win over the touring Wye Rustics on a flat deck and a fast outfield at Exeter’s County Ground.
The Rustics made rapid progress when they took the first knock and reached 142 by lunch for the loss of five wickets, largely due to a spirited innings by Charlie Munton, who was 61 not out at the break.
Munton was stumped giving it an injudicious charge immediately after lunch and the rest of the Rustics innings owed much to a powerful knock of 72 from Richard Poole, who made 72, with 23 coming from from John Dinnis.
The all-out total was 247 , the most successful Dumplings bowler being Abbotskerswell’s Chris Kelmere who took 3-36. He was well backed up by clubmate Aran Hearn and Shobrooke’s Nick James who both grabbed two wickets.
The Dumplings made light work of overhauling the Rustics total, largely due to Ashworth’s rapid ton, and the job was done during the second of the last 20 overs.
Ashworth was well supported by Ottery’s Sam Loud with 36 and Abbotskerswell clubmate Josh Dowling with 24. Kelmere was in at the death with a quick 18 not out. For the Rustics it was again Charlie Munton who starred, getting through 17 overs for his three for 63.
Wye Rustics 247 (Poole 72, Munton 62, Dinnis 23, Kelmere 3-36, Hearn 2-25, James 2-33), Devon Dumplings 251 for 4 (Ashworth 127, Loud 36, Dowling 24, Kelmere 18 not out, Munton 3-63). Dumplings won by 6 wkts.
