SANDFORD were given a harsh reminder how tough it is in the Premier Division when they nosedived to a 123-run defeat at Cornwood.
Matt Skeemer top scored with 54 as Cornwood made 195 all out in the 48th of their 50 overs, building on a solid start from opener Chris Parker, who made 42.
Then Matt Butterworth ripped out the top four as Sandford stumbled to 12 for four in the first game back in the top flight.
Only Steve Morish made a double-figure score as Sandford were skittled out for 72 in the 29th over.
Cornwood’s record-breaking new signing Jackson Thompson – he has arrived from Bradninch with the only Premier double ton ever made to his name – had a quiet debut. He made 19 before being bowled by Laundre van Wyk.
Thompson made 19 of the first 20 then Parker kept the board moving with help from Jason Hall and Craig Harris.
A stand of 81 for the third wicket with Skeemer formed the backbone of the Cornwood total.
South African van Wyk with four for 39 was the pick of the Sandford bowlers.
After an early duffing up from Butterworth, and a wicket each for Langley and Goodliffe, Sandford were 33 for six.
Morish batted to the end for an unbeaten 27 before Staddon (2-13) whipped out the stragglers.
No one else made a double-figure score.
New Sandford skipper Jamie Palmer said there was plenty to work on before the game against Plymouth at Creedy Park this Saturday.
“Cornwood are a strong bowling outfit and we were under strength,” said Palmer.
“We bowled and fielded ok, bet need to bat better against the new ball as 12 for four is tough to recover from.”
Sandford were below strength against Cornwood, but have batters Laurence May, Richard Tucker and Peter Steer to come back in. Chris Blake is missing but Morish keep his place having impressed in defeat.
"It is more like a full-strength side this week," said Palmer.
