South Devon CC celebrate youth cricket award
South Devon youngsters – and their coaches –in the nets with the Spirit of Cricket Trophy

AWARD-winning South Devon CC’s thriving youth section will be bigger this year with a new age-group team for U10s and U11s.

The Newton Abbot-based club were winners of the South Devon Youth League’s spirit of cricket award last season.

Dave Leaman, the director of youth at South Devon, said: “To be recognised by the league is a fantastic accolade and endorses the great steps we’re making in bringing cricket to more and more people in the Newton Abbot area.

“The summer ahead is shaping up to be a good one, so much so that we have a new age-group team for 11/12 year olds to run alongside the Under 11 and Under 14 teams and the softball section for 7 to 10 year olds.

“We are also once again providing coaches to selected local primary schools throughout the summer term.”

The spirit of cricket award isn’t about winning trophies, but recognising the hard work done by clubs to bring up their players properly.

“For many individuals and teams who participate in the South Devon Youth Cricket League, their experiences and ambitions go beyond just winning games of cricket,” said competition chairman Chris Partridge. “While most of the annual awards recognise cricketing excellence and success on the pitch, this trophy is intended to acknowledge those who maybe don't always win, but go about everything in the correct way and as the name suggests, embody the Spirit of Cricket .

“Ian Western, our president, selected South Devon to receive the trophy for their work re-starting a junior section through Chance to Shine, as well as for the positive attitude and friendly approach demonstrated by their junior players in matches during the season."

Youth training at South Devon’s Marsh Road ground takes place every Friday between 6-7.30pm. Youngsters from school years six and seven wanted.

CHANCE to Shine sessions are on the fixture list again this summer at South Devon CC in Newton Abbot.

Chance to Shine – the Brit Insurance-sponsored initiative to take cricket into state schools – is now in its third year at South Devon CC.

South Devon are part of the ECB focus club network delivering a high-quality summer term coaching and competition programme to local primary schools.

Matt Hunt, former Devon and Gloucestershire cricketer and  coach, will be working with Decoy, St Michael’s, Wolborough, St Joseph’s, Highweek and Rydon primary schools during the summer.

Dave Leaman, director of youth cricket at the Marsh Road club, said: “Our involvement in Chance to Shine has been fantastic so far.

“We have forged strong links with local schools, introduced hundreds of youngsters to the game and in partnership with staff and parents have seen a dramatic increase in the number of young players attending our club.”

South Devon will also be holding friendly fun sessions every Thursday throughout the summer term between 4.30-5.30pm, from April 18 for girls and boys aged 8-11 who would like to have fun and learn how to play cricket.

Peter Farrell, the club’s chance to shine manager, said: “This is a great opportunity for any junior aged pupil attending a local school to pick up the basics of the game while having fun doing so.”

Sessions cost £1 a time. Additional details are available from Farrell on  01626 369478.
