SOUTH Devon look in good shape for the top-of-the table clash at Marsh Lane with Ipplepen after dispatching Dartington & Totnes by 90 runs.
South Devon struggled at first as Neil Hancock (29), Dave Knowles and Sean Day had all been and gone in a running total of 89 for five.
Ryan Stevenson had bottled South Devon up at one end – he bowled nine overs for 26 runs – and wickets were falling to Jono Colgate (4-26) at the other.
Mike Smith spared South Devon’s blushes by getting his head down to make 53.
Ryan Maunder weighed in with 24 not out as South Devon recovered to make 169.
That proved too many for D&T, who collapsed from 30 for one to 62 for seven and on to 79 all out.
Knowles (3-11) and Jonny Martin (3-18) did most of the damage.
Ali Wright, the South Devon captain, has now upped the club’s target from winning promotion to doing it as hundred per centers.
“Preferably, I would like us to get promoted without losing a game, but we will take it either way,” said Wright.
“We're working hard on all areas through the week and it's showing on Saturdays, but I believe we're some way off hitting top gear as a team.”
On the win over D&T, Wright added: “It was probably a 150 track so we did well setting them 170.
“I have to give a huge nod to Mike Smith, who applied himself really well for his 50, well supported by Hanks and Ryan Maunder.
“Simon Rooke saw off a really good opening spell from Ryan Stevenson, too.”
Darts’ skipper Stevenson was left to winder what might have been?
“We bowled well and fielded well with one exception – we dropped Smith on six,” lamented Stevenson.
“Had we held that catch they wouldn’t have got 169 and it would have been a different game.
“To be fair South Devon are the best bowling side we have seen this season and we helped them with some capitulation.”
