Seward and Prior switch to Seaton

SEATON have strengthened significantly for the season ahead by snapping up Joel Seward and Robbie Prior from Axminster.

Joel Seward, who topped the batting averages in the B Division last term with 623 at 69.22, is on his way to Court Lane. Seward (above) also bowls left-arm over.

And Robbie Prior, a seamer who can also bat, has also defected from Cloakham to the coast.

The path between the two clubs is a well-worn one and many of the players know each other from school days.

Axminster will be disappointed to lose two players who came up through their youth ranks and were seen as key members of the team.

Ben Morgan, the Seaton captain, knows Seward and Prior well and says they will strengthen the side for the challenges ahead in a higher division.

“Growing up with Joel and Robbie and playing with them for Axminster U17s and at school, I know they are two very good players who have performed at a very good level,” said Morgan (left).

“The restructuring of the lower divisions in the Devon League means we are playing in the C Division this term.

“Last year we were playing in the D Division and the lads will bring huge experience and quality to the side.

“I am looking forward to walking out on to the pitch with them both.”

Seward joined Axminster aged 10 and made his 1st XI debut at 14.

He had a three-year spell with Chard (2010-12) and played for every Devon age group between U14-U21.

On making the move he said: “With the new league structure regarding regionalisation it was a no-brainer for me to join such a big club like Seaton who seem to have a strong intention to climb the ladder in the Devon League.

“Over the past couple of seasons I have played a few friendlies at Court Lane and enjoy every opportunity to get out on to one of the best grounds in East Devon.

“I would like to thank Axminster for all their help and wish them all the best for the up and coming season.”

Prior only featured in a couple of games for Axminster in 2014 due to knee surgery but in 2013 played a huge part with the ball in Axminster’s promotion to the B Division.

He also joined Axminster aged 10 and played for all their youth and senior teams before becoming a regular opening bowler for their 1st XI.

Prior played for Dorset at youth level and spent a season in Melbourne in 2012, scoring three centuries and taking 24 wickets.

Prior and Morgan are big friends off the field, which was a significant factor in his decision to move

“I believe the only time we played cricket together was at school so I am looking forward to being on the same side as him,” said Prior (pictured, right).

I am excited about a new challenge and I believe Seaton can put up a strong challenge this season.

“I have had a great time playing for Axminster for the last 14 years and would like to wish them all the best for the season.”

Seaton are always looking for new players or volunteers to score or umpire.

PAUL Miller has been reappointed as captain of Aximinster for the season ahead.

Tristan Wakeley was captain in 2013 and 2014 having replaced Miller, who led the side from 2010-2012.
