The story so far... Shaldon produce club history!

A NEW book looking at the history so far of Shaldon Optimists CC goes on sale this Saturday.

Club chairman Glynn Ballman has written the book which charts the rise of the club since it was formed in 1995.

The Optimists started out playing their games in Bishopsteignton  back in 1995 and were based at Hearn  Field near the Coombe Cellars pub from 1997 to 2010.

They moved across the river to Teignmouth during  2010 and started playing home games at Hazeldown Oval the following year.

The move has coincided with a period of unmitigated success for the club as they have been promoted every summer since the move.

Hard work by club members has seen the ground developed into a real cricket venue with dressing rooms, a tea room and a scorebox.

How Shaldon got where they are now is detailed in the book, which is being launched by England rugby mascot Peter Cross (pictured, right).

Flag-waver Cross, who lives nearby, is a bit cricket fan and keen to lend his support to the purpose of the book, which is to raise money for the youth section.

“The book will sell for £5 and all of this will go towards club funds,” sid Bullman.

“The club has a very strong youth section and income helps us deliver excellent training to young aspiring cricketers.

“The book can be sent through the post, but we will have to add £1.75 postage and packaging.”
