EXETER City manager Paul Tisdale will open the new 3rd XI pitch at Shaldon on Thursday night.
Shaldon’s chairman is Charlie Woolnough, whose day job is as Exeter City’s groundsman.
The Tolchards Devon League C Division West outfit have been steadily improving their ground at Hazeldown in Teignmouth since moving into it four years ago.
Shaldon has launched a 3rd XI this season and, rather than look for a satellite ground to play on, has created one at Hazeldown.
“Room isn’t a problem as our ground is very long so we have created two pitches side by side,” said Woolnough.
“Other clubs have satellite grounds for their 3rd XIs, but that means players never actually get to play at their own club during the season.
“We have put a big marquee up on the ground so that everyone can have tea together.
“A square was laid out last year, a net purchased to separate the two pitches and now we are ready to go.”
Tisdale will open the annexed pitch by umpiring a junior game. There will be a break in play around 7pm for players and guests to attend a reception in the marquee.
