Murray warns Sidmouth players to be wary of Exmouth

SIDMOUTH captain Will Murray won’t be underestimating Exmouth in Saturday’s derby clash on the Fortfield.

While Sidmouth were beating Bovey Tracey by five runs last time out, Exmouth were going down to 20-run home defeat against North Devon.

“Exmouth may have lost but they are a good side who will be up there near the top at the end of the season,” said Murray.

Exmouth skipper Richard Baggs said Sidmouth’s win over Bovey proved the defending champions remained a tough proposition despite the players they have lost since winning the title.

“Sidmouth have lost a lot of wicket takers since last season – Bess, Barlow and Babula – but they still managed to stop Bovey chasing them,” said Baggs.

“It is a big game early in the season and one it would help us to win.

“Let’s not kid ourselves though, it is going to be tough over there, especially if the wicket plays a big part again.

“Our Devon lads came back on Sunday from the Dorset game saying it wasn’t a typical Sidmouth wicket, but one with more bounce and carry than usual.”

Opposite number Murray agreed the wicket was performing a little differently this year, but good batters seem to be coping with it.

“Harvey Sargent and Matt Cooke got 50s for us last Saturday, and Peter Bradley had one for Bovey, said Murray.

“There are runs to be had, you just have to be a bit selective in what shots you play.”

Exmouth name the same team that lost to North Devon, which means John Evennett remains unavailable for another week.

Sidmouth will get their first look at Exmouth’s new West Indian quick bowler Marques Clarke, who picked up three North Devon wickets on his debut.

Baggs said Clarke isn’t quite the 85mph express put forward by is agent, but pace isn’t everything.

“He is quick enough, bowls a good line and length rather than spraying it around bowling too quickly and nips the ball around,” said Baggs.

“If the North Devon game is anything to go by, he will take plenty of wickets for us this season.”

Sidmouth welcome back keeper-batter Pete Randerson, who was suspended for the first two matches.

Also back is batsman Nick Gingell. Adam Dibble and Miles Dalton are unavailable.
