Lewis puts skids under old club

LIAM Lewis did his former club no favours as Sidmouth beat Exmouth by 32 runs

Devon opener Lewis, who started his Devon League career at Exmouth, bats more than he bowls these days but remains an option for skipper Will Murray.

With former Devon captain Bob Dawson (42) closing on yet another Premier Division half century, Lewis was brought on and nipped him out in his second over.

Three more wickets followed – Gary Chappell for 37 the important one – and Exmouth faded away to 166 for nine in reply to Sidmouth’s 198 for nine.

Lewis also completed the run-out of Andy Buzza after a nifty piece of fielding by Matt Cooke.

Sidmouth didn’t have it all their own way when they batted and were glad of   55-run stand for the ninth wicket between Matt Hewer and Will Murray.

Nick Gingell (48) and Harvey Sargent (22) had scored most of the runs in 23-over total of 106 for five.

Exmouth picked up wickets mid-innings as Sidmouth declined to 141 for eight.

Former captain Anthony Griffiiths said the importance of the stand between Hewer and Murray could not be understated.

“We managed t o bat out our overs and that was due to Will and Matt,” said Griffiths.

“I felt we were probably 25-30 below par for the conditions, but with close to 200 on the board we had something to defend.

“Our bowlers put in a good shift and you could see once Dawson went it was going to be down to Chappell to get them and he was losing partners at the other end too often.”

Richard Baggs, the Exmouth captain, said losing early wickets put his side under pressure.

“I used up a lot of balls for 17 runs as I was concerned about our recent batting displays,” said Baggs.

“When I was out Andy Buzza and Bob Dawson had the same issue, which was how we left ourselves too much to do,

“The Buzza run-out was big point in the game but you have to give Sidmouth credit they bowled well and don't give us much rubbish to hit.

“But we didn't force the issue enough, or take enough risks. We need to look at this and play with a bit more freedom."
