DEVON are in the driving seat against Herefordshire at Sidmouth after finally getting under way a day late.There was no play at all on Sunday due to bad weather, but the action did start on time today.
Herefordshire, who won the toss and batted, negotiated the first 16 overs without mishap, although opener David Exall did have some luck as he was put down twice.
Devon made a breakthough on 46 when Steve Stebbings was caught behind off Trevor Anning.
Dangerman Steve Adshead, who was severe on Devon twice over when the sides lastt met, was in and out for a single – caught in the slips by Rob Holman off Peter Bradley.
Exall’s luck ran out in 65 when Bradley snared him lbw for 22.
Brad Wadlan lasted just five balls – Ryan Bougourd having him caught behind – then skipper Chris Boroughs was caught at mid-on off the same bowler.
The last man out before lunch was Charlie Walker, who was the third caught-behind of the session for Thompson.
Herefordshire were 100 for six at lunch and made no further progress prior to a brief break for rain.
Andy Kimberlin (30) and Tim Austwick (8) pushed the score along to 127 for six after the resumption.
Kimberlin was the senior partner in a stand of 57 for the seventh wicket, making 33. The stand was broken on 138 by a smart run out effected by skipper Chris Bradley from wide mid-off.
Austwick went two overs later, playing down the wrong line to Josh Bess, who twanged his off stump.
After 57 overs Herefordsihre were 142 for eight when a combination of rain and bad light stopped play.
There was no further play before 5.30pm, when umpires and captains elected to call it a day.
