NORTH Devon’s team building for the season ahead is almost complete with the capture of South African all-rounder Jason Smith.Smith, an early-order batsman and medium quick bowler, has played a handful of games for Western Province and five times for South Africa U19s.
The good news for North Devon is they have had first-hand reports on Smith from England U19 star Jamie Overton, who played against him in February.
The bad news for North Devon is they anticipate losing Smith with around a month of the season to go as he has South Africa U19 obligations at home.
North Devon recently re-signed spin-bowler turned opening batsman Max Curtis (right), who spent last season turning out for Premier rivals Exmouth.
New to Instow this season is former Bruanton batsman Barney Huxtable, who opened the batting with Curtis at Exmouth last summer.
Huxtable has migrated overseas for the past two winters to continue his cricket education and has just returned from a season in Australiawith Altona North in the VCA.
Huxtable (left) topped the batting averages for Altona North. The highlight of his season was a century against Williamstown.
There was also a four wicket haul against Youlden Parkville to savour.
North Devon have signed Zimbabwean international Glenn Querl for a third summer at Instow, although how much they will see of him isn’t completely clear.
Querl has been having trials with Hampshire as he continues to push for a First Class contract.
Hampshire have looked at Querl in the past, as have Somerset, and it is his form for Matabeleland Tuskers in the Logan Cup at home which have jogged their memories.
Querl averaged 82.60 with the bat – hitting an unbeaten 188 against Southern Rocks – and with 37 wickets at 16.62 each finished fourth in the bowling list.
