U17 secure vital away victory

Devon U17 Girls (136-4) beat Somerset U17 Girls (133-8) by 6 wickets

On Friday August 7th Devon U17 Girls played their return match against Somerset at Millfield. As with so many games against Somerset over the years, the sides produced a good game of cricket played with friendly rivalry.

Somerset batted first and their innings promised far more than the side delivered, as all the top order got in and made a few runs but no one went on to make a substantial score. Charlie Voden top scored with 28 before being run out.

Devon used eight bowlers and all produced tidy spells. Clara Nielson took two wickets and Giselle Ansley, Becca Donohue and Tessa Dibble also took a wicket apiece.

Devon’s reply was initially a mirror image of Somerset’s innings with batsmen playing themselves in and then getting out. At the half way stage Somerset were marginally ahead with Devon four wickets down (and in reality 5 down with an injured player); their slow bowlers bowling well; and Devon behind the required run rate. An unbroken fifth wicket partnership, though, between Frances Lausen (35 not out) and Jodie Dibble (29 (not out) took Devon to victory with overs to spare. Initially Frances led the chase with shrewdly placed shots. But, as the victory target came into sight Jodie unfurled an array of textbook attacking shots.

Frances Lausen won the “woman of the match” award for her well-paced innings.
