South Devon CC youngsters and officials with the ClubMark certificateSOUTH Devon CC are building for the future after completing all the stages required to win Clubmark accreditation from the England and Wales Cricket Board.
Clubmark recognises the work the Newton Abbot club have undertaken prioritising junior development, working alongside the Devon Cricket Board.
A key element of the successful Clubmark application was the development of South Devon Cricket Club’s ‘Chance to Shine’ programme supporting the development of junior cricket and the creation of links between the club and schools.
Barry Widdicombe, the club chairman, said: “The progress we have made as a club has helped us achieve the Clubmark award which is wonderful recognition for our club as a safe environment in which to play and experience cricket participation.
“The aim of our Chance to Shine campaign is to create sustainable links between South Devon Cricket Club and local schools. “This has been made possible by the Cricket Foundation funding payment for coaches to visit schools in our area.
“The programme, so far, as proved to be very successful and has allowed us to introduce many more children to the great game of cricket.”
Clubmark is another feather in the cap for South Devon, who won promotion into the Francis Clark Devon League A Division at the end of last season.
Sponsors Wollen Michelmore have shown their confidence in South Devon by renewing their sponsorship deal with the club for another three years.
South Devon will be running teams at U11 and U13 level this season. Coaching is managed by ECB Level Two coach Ian Shepherd, assisted by James Hart and David Leaman.
Hart and Leaman, who doubles as the club’s youth director, are both aiming to pass Level Two exams this year.
Said Leaman: “We are now into year two of our programme to become the most successful club around.
“I would love to see more kids join us to help achieve that and be part of the club’s success.”
