DEVON defeated Wales by five wickets at Exmouth after a mini-collapse delayed them after tea.Chasing 125 to win in a maximum of 49 overs, Devon were 43 without loss at tea with James Burke on 22 and Rob Woodman 11 not out.
A three-wicket burst from Scott Phillips, who bowled Burke and David Lye then trapped Josh Bess lbw, had Devon rocking at 56 for three.
Then Matt Wood was run out for a single, followed by Woodman being caught at mid-wicket trying to hit Keiron Bull over the inner ring.
Sixth wicket pair Rob Holman (11no) and Matt Thompson (28no) came together at 79 for five and put on 46 without loss to win the game.
Earlier, Ryan Bougroud took seven for 41 on his Minor Counties debut as Devon dismissed Wales for 124.
Wales reached 34 without loss in the first 10 overs – then lost three wickets without scoring a run.
First out was opener Sean Griffiths, who was bowled by Bougourd for 17.
Next to fall was Charlie Lowen, who tried to hit Trevor Anning over the top and was caught by a back-peddling Chris Bradley at mid-on.
Then Callum Reid went six balls later to Anning, caught at second slip by Josh Bess.
Bougourd had Jamie Claybrook caught at mid-on by Matt Wood as 34 for three became 50 for four.
He followed up by bowling Mike Griffiths as Wales subsided to 49 for five
Skipper Darren Thomas and Keiron Bull took the score up to 53 when Bougourd struck again. This time it was Thomas who found Wood at mid-on.
Bull and Harry Powell took Wales to 63 for six after 39 overs at the lunch break.
Bougourd removed Powell (lbw), Bull caught at cover and Nick Davis caught and bowled as Wales subsided to 106 for nine.
Trevor Anning took the last wicket to fall – Jon Denning caught on the boundary to finish with three for 32.
Bougourd was unlucky not to have wrapped it up before then though as Matt Wood dropped last man Scott Phillips on the boundary in the previous over. To add insult to injury the ball rolled over the rope for four.
