Last season's North Devon U13 side at a softball tournament
NORTH Devon CC will be running a ladies' team in the Devon Ladies League for the 2014 season.Slee Blackwell solicitors will be sponsoring the team, which will be known as North Devon Tarka Ladies.
The team is drawn from a number of clubs in the North Devon area who got together last summer to put out sides at U13 and U15 level.
Jan Witheridge, the team manager, said there was strength in numbers for this growing part of the game.
"In the past, talented young players have been lost to the game because of the long distances they have needed to travel to play quality ladies cricket, although a number have participated very successfully in boy's and men's teams at their clubs," said Witheridge.
"Following last season's success of the U15 and U13 Tarka teams made up of players from a number of clubs, this is a natural progression, the intention being to provide a platform to enable young women to play all-ladies cricket."
The extension of Tarka Ladies into the adult league will provide an opportunity for women of all ages from all over North Devon to play and compete together.
Said Witheridge: "Playing all-girls cricket is essential to the development of players who wish to progress up the women's player pathway or just continue to enjoy the game.
"The support from all the cricket clubs in North Devon for Tarka Girls has always been fantastic and fixtures have been organised to facilitate ladies who already participate successfully in men's teams at their respective clubs continuing to do so."
Tarka Ladies have been welcomed by the other members of the Devon Ladies League and competition chairman, Warren Carr.
They have been entered into Division Two, where they will play five matches.
Tarka Ladies have an ambitious winter training program under the eye of coach Mark Overton, who said: "We are looking to welcome existing lady cricketers to the club and new members who would like to return to playing or just enjoy the game."
The first training session will take place at West Buckland School on January 19.
