Tavistock triumph in match of the day

TAVISTOCK defeated Ivybridge by seven wickets in the B Division match of the day at the Ring.

The Moorlanders got to 174 all out in fits and starts – Jamie Stephens making a valuable 43 after coming in at 119 for six.

Ivybridge looked on top at 86 for one, were in trouble at 121 for seven, but played positive cricket right to the end before running out of batters at 167.

Victory keeps Tavy on top ahead of Thorverton with Ivybridge now 17 points behind in third place.

“it was a cracking game which could have gone either way and we did well to win it,” said Tavvy captain Shaun Daymond.

“Jamie Stephens’ knock was absolutely crucial for us.

“At 126 for seven when Josh Stephens went, we were looking at 140 all out, maybe another batting point at 150, if we were lucky.

“Jamie batted superbly and the tail hung around with him.

“Last man Lee Baker just stuck around for a few overs at the end and in that time Jamie hit a couple of fours. We won the match by seven runs and that’s where they came from.”

It looked plain sailing for Tavvy as Alan Churchill ((26) and Ian Gray (26) put on 61, only to fall within the space of five balls to Josh Zimmerman (2-33) and Jeewan de Silva (3-24) respectively.

Shaun Cleave (24) and Dave Maning ticked the score along before wickets started to tumble.

Stephens did most of the batting with the tail. Baker’s contribution of two not out may not look much, but his stand of 34 for the final wicket was absolutely vital.

Ramesh Perera (21), Zimmerman (28) and Kevin Jacobs got the early runs for Ivybridge.

Wickets were shared around – two for Daymond, two for James McGahey and singles for Cleave and Jamie Stephens – as Ivybridge lost their way.

Chris Greenhouse (16no) started the comeback, then Adam Huxtable (17) and Peter Abraham (15) took it on.

Cleave (3-23) and the returning McGahey (4-30) got the  tail enders out in the nick of time.
