TEIGNBRIDGE T20 - WEEK ONE
CHAMPIONS Bovey Tracey got off to a winning start in the Teignbridge T20 tournament with a nine-wicket win over Ipplepen.
The Pens’ total of 142 for six in 20 overs – anchored by knocks of 41 from Matt Quartley and 56 by Kiwi Jamie Watkins – looked respectable on paper.
The Premier side had too much firepower for the Pens as they strolled home with more than three overs to spare.
Ben Ayres clubbed 87 off 48 balls, with 12 fours and a six, while Andrew de-Boorder was 45 not out at the end.
Derek Lammonby was in the runs for Chagford as they defeated Chudleigh by three wickets in their opening encounter.
Chudleigh were 142 for seven – Ben Tuckett 53 – which Chagford knocked off thanks to Lammonby’s unbeaten 96.
Match of the night in the first round of fixtures was Abbotskerswell’s 20-run victory over near neighbours South Devon.
Abbots were put in and raced to 101 for one at half way with Chris Kelmere (70) and Mike Pugh (47) in full cry.
Kelmere savaged the bowling, hitting eight fours and three sixes on his way to 50 in 38 balls.
When Pugh got out, the evergreen Danny Full joined Kelmere to add 50 against one of his former clubs.
A final total of 184 for four was always going to be a challenge for South Devon, but they had a good go at getting it.
Matt Blackmore (38) and Dave Baldock (48) got South Devon up to 70 for two after eight overs.
At 110 for two with eight to go it was game on, then 17 year old Kelmere took a hand in proceedings.
Bowling in tandem with Steve Short, another South Devon old boy, the chase slowed as wickets fell.
