Exeter need to find new skipper

EXETER are looking for a new captain next season after Jon Tipper confirmed he won’t be carrying on in the job.

Tipper, 39, has completed two stints as captain, leading Exeter back into the Premier Division in 2012 after they were relegated two years earlier.

Within the first few weeks of last season Tipper went on the injured list and handed the reins to Tom Viljoen.

Viljoen led the side until the second half of the season when Rob Holman took over.

Explaining his decision to call it a day, Tipper said: “In reality I gave up halfway through last season.

“I was fit enough to play a bit in the 2nd XI and really enjoyed it.

“I don’t know how many years I have done as captain now, but it is probably six or seven in both stints. That's enough!

“I won’t stop playing and will remain available for selection if needed.”

Replacing Tipper isn’t going to be straightforward for Exeter as work commitments get in the way for the leading contenders.

Viljoen works for Exeter Chiefs and has Saturday duties at the both ends of the cricket season which prevent him playing cricket.

Holman has captained Exeter in the past, but as teacher in the private sector has to work on Saturdays until mid-June.
