Torquay top of the table after two games

TORQUAY sit top of the Premier Division table after routing Exeter by six wickets on the County Ground.

Somerset’s Max Waller and spinner Matt Petherbridge bagged three wickets each as Exeter were dismissed for 101.

Waller (45) and new recruit Tim Piper (21) wrapped up the win during an unbroken stand of 60 for the fifth wicket.

That’s two wins on the spin for Torquay, who go into Saturday’s game against Heathcoat a point clear of their opponents at the top of the table.

Skipper Justin Yay said the important thing after two games is to avoid getting over excited.

“It is a fantastic start, no question about that, but there are some seriously good sides in the league and we will take stock in August and see where we are then,” said Yau.

“We are enjoying life competing with the best and simmering around the top of the league and it's nice to look down on the table rather than look up.

“Heathcoat is a massive game and we hope we can continue in the same vain.”

Zac Bess (23) and cousin Dom Bess (22) the leading run getters.

New signing Wil Hardwick, who went in at number nine, was the only other batter to reach double-figures, He made 15.

Torquay bowled tight early on through Ryan Stevenson and Mitch Pugh, kept the pressure  on through Nick Watkin (2-12) and Sach Galhenage then got the spinners on to great effect.

Waller bagged three for 24 from eight overs and left-armer Petherbridge took three more for 18 runs.

Hardwick, a former Somerset age-group seamer who has been playing in Cheshire before moving to Devon, had a wicket in his second over when he had Justin Yau caught behind.

Tom Barton, the Universty of Exeter pacer on board with Exeter for the season, then too three in a row, which will have encouraged skipper Miles Lenygon on a dull day.

Torquay were 45 for four after 16 overs – and didn’t lose another wicket getting the rest of the runs.

Waller led the way with 45 off 54 balls, aided and abetted by Tim Piper with 13 in an unbroken stand of 60 for the fifth wicket.

“It was another good toss to win but we bowled well and made it difficult for them all the way through the innings,” said Yau.

“Nick Watkin got two massive wickets in Zac Bess and Miles Lenygon, aided by another great spell up top by Ryan Stevenson.

Matt Petherbridge’s home debut was as good as it could get, and he is demonstrating how mature he is for a very young lad.

“It was a great moment for him to leave us off the field after such a promising spell of bowling.

“Max did his usual bit and batted superbly along with Tim Piper to win the game for us.

“Exeter bowled really well and they made it extremely hard for us.

“Fortunately we bat all the way down and when you still have the likes of Stevenson, Thompson, Watkin and Richardson still in the hutch, it allows us bat with freedom.”
