SOMERSET are sending a star-studded side to Newton Abbot on June 2 to play South Devon CC in a benefit game for Peter Trego.
All-rounder Trego has played more than 300 games for Somerset since making his debut in 2000.
Although Trego (pictured) has had spells with Kent and Middlesex since then, Somerset has always been his first love.
With more than 13,000 runs and nearly 600 wickets in all forms of cricket, Trego has earned his benefit season.
The Somerset side won’t be named until closer to the match, but former England star Marcus Trescothick has already confirmed he will be playing.
Other players pencilled in for the game include James Hildreth, Lewis Gregory, Tim Groenewald, Alfonso Thomas and the Overton twins – Craig and Jamie. The full side will be announced closer to the date of the match.
It is the first time Somerset have played at South Devon since 1961 when they brought down a side for Bill Alley’s testimonial. More than a thousand cricket lovers packed the ground to see the game.
“I can remember being a schoolboy and going to watch the game on a Sunday afternoon – and watching Alley smash sixes on to the roof of the biscuit factory next door,” said South Devon’s current chairman Barry Widdicombe.
South Devon are pulling out all the stops to make not just the game but the entire day a success.
Events get under way with a morning golf match at Stover involving Trego and some of the match-day sponsors.
Gates for the cricket open at 2pm and admission is by souvenir programme priced at £3 each. Under-16 will be admitted free.
Programmes are available now from South Devon CC in Marsh Road, or the Newton Abbot office of main sponsor Wollen Michelmore in Market Street.
The Wollen Michelmore offices in Torquay, Paignton, Dartmouth, Barnstaple and Bideford also have tickets on sale.
A few tickets remain available for the VIP marquee, which can be ordered online at www.southdevoncc.co.uk.
Outside catering will be available before and during the match – and there will be a bar on the ground.
Before the T20 match starts at 5.30pm, there will be entertainment from Heart FM presenter Marc Ryan and a youth cricket demonstration by the Chance to Shine team.
Widdicombe said as the match is unique in more ways than one, he is hoping for a bumper crowd.
“Somerset have not played on our ground for more than 50 years and we haven’t had any sort of testimonial game at the club since the late 1960s,” said Widdicombe.
Somerset are only playing one game like this in Devon this season – and we are hosting it. We know Somerset have a lot of followers in Devon and hope they will come along to support their team.”
