On July 29th, Devon played Hampshire at New Milton Cricket Club. For a variety of reasons Devon fielded a number of young players.
Devon won the toss and, in overcast conditions, decided to put the opposition in. Hampshire began slowly against Devon’s opening attack of Becky Bertrand and 13 year-old Milly Squire, and in attempting a quick run lost their first wicket when Claire Varcoe with a direct throw effected a run out. Supported by excellent fielding, Devon’s bowling attack gave little away and - apart Aylish Cranstone with a watchful 41 - all Hampshire’s batsmen found batting difficult on a slow pitch. Both Becky Bertrand and Claire Varcoe picked up three wickets and Annabel Squire two wickets.
Jodie Dibble and Lydia Harris each took two sharp catches and 12 year-old Jesse Jones was outstanding fielding in the deep.
Devon 113-1 (Amara Carr 50*, Frances Lausen 23, Becky Bertrand 18*) beat Hampshire 112 all out (Aylish Cranstone 41; Becky Bertrand 3-17, Claire Varcoe 3-25, Annabel Squire 2-13) by 9 wickets
