Devon U17 Girls v Surrey Under 17 Girls 2011

On August 5th, Devon played Surrey at Hatherleigh. Once again Devon was indebted to its younger players, who all performed well.

Devon won the toss and decided to bat. Opener Amara Carr scored 69 and then 14 year-olds Claire Varcoe (31) and Cait O’Keefe (14*) put on 36 for the 9th wicket, as Devon closed on 173 for 9 in 45 overs.

In reply, Surrey’s openers made a steady start but the introduction of Lydia Harris in the 7th over – who bowled 9 overs for only 9 runs in one spell – put Surrey well behind the required run rate. Slowly Devon tightened the screw, as all Devon’s seven bowlers bowled economically. Clare Reynolds took 3 wickets for 25 and Emily Ward 2 for 19. Jodie Dibble made two sharp catches fielding close to the wicket.

Devon 173-9 (Amara Carr 69, Claire Varcoe 31; Libbie Walters 3-24) beat Surrey 107–8 (Hannah Jones 39; Clare Reynolds 3-25) by 66 runs
