Wales U17 Girls v Devon Under 17 Girls 2011

On April 19th, Devon played a friendly against Wales at Newport Cricket Club. Half of Devon’s team were playing at this level for the first time.

Wales’ innings was well paced. The second wicket pair of Bethan Moorcroft and Gwenan Davis showed excellent judgement in running between the wickets and put Devon’s inexperienced side under pressure in the field during a stand of 79. At the end of the innings Lauren Parfitt and Rebecca Stuthers put on an unbeaten 65 together in quick time. Devon’s young bowlers remained in good heart and the performances of U15 players, particularly Cait O’Keefe and Annabell Squire, showed promise. In the field, debutant Sophie Hember set an excellent example of how to “put your body on the line.”

In reply, Devon soon lost three wickets. Lydia Harris and Frances Lausen put on 38 for the fourth wicket but once they got out to injudicious strokes Wales’s bowlers made steady inroads. TP Turner – on debut – showed good resolve in scoring 13 before being last out.
