DACO suspend umpire for four games
DEVON League umpire Phil Matten has been banned from standing for four matches following a disciplinary hearing in Exeter on Tuesday night.

The former Sandford seam bowler, who stands in Minor Counties matches as well as the Devon League, was subject to a complaint by Bovey Tracey after their defeat by Exmouth two weeks ago.

Bovey Tracey lost the match, a feature of which was seven lbw decision against them in the second inning, five of which were given by Matten.

Bovey’s complaint centred around Matten’s management of the match rather than his decision making.

The hearing was convened by DACO – the Devon Association of Cricket Officials – and chaired by president Roger Moylan-Jones.

In a statement released after the hearing, DACO chairman Gavin Lane said Matten had acted in a way which brought the good name of umpires and the association into question.

“After consideration of evidence from the various parties involved and a full and frank exchange, the hearing panel of David Moseby and Gavin Lane, under the chairmanship of Roger Moylan-Jones, unanimously agreed that umpire Philip Matten had acted in a manner that was prejudicial to the good name of DACO and the impartial and unbiased duties of umpires,” said Lane.

“It is stressed that the hearing did not concern itself with umpiring decisions made on the field of play.

Taking into account the importance of upholding the high standards required of DACO umpires and Philip Matten’s standing and experience in the Devon Cricket League, on the MCCA panel and in other high-profile matches, the panel decided that umpire Philip Matten should be suspended for four Devon Cricket League weeks, starting from August 25, 2012 and completing after the second Devon Cricket League week in 2013.”
