League backing umpire recruitment

THE Devon League is getting behind a recruiting drive to get more umpires trained to stand in matches.

DACO – the Devon Association of Cricket Officials – provides umpires for all games in the top four division of the Devon League.

New recruits have almost dried up in recent summers – and the active list inevitably gets shorter as officials retire or, as in two instances last season, die.

DACO has officials as old as 77 standing in 1st XI league games – and few under the age of 60.

David Moseby, the training officer for the South Devon area, said if clubs don’t put trainees forward they might find they don’t get umpires on a Saturday afternoon.

“Not every game last season had two umpires as there weren’t always enough to go round.

“Without some new recruits, it is possible we might have to drop the C Division from our panel list next season.”

DACO already runs local, introductory courses for anyone interested in umpiring as stepping stone. Moseby (07969 351185) can supply more details.

Similar training is available in the north, west and east of the county. Contact details can be found at www.devoncricket.com/page.asp?p=umpires-officials

To get involved in league umpiring requires a level one qualification obtained by attending a course lasting around between 12-16 hours.

The course usually costs £120, but the league is offering a subsidy of £75 per person to encourage recruitment

The next level one course will take place at Heathcoat CC, Tiverton on March 14 and 21, 2015. To get a place, contact league secretary Ed Leverton on 01752 774188 or secretary@devoncricketleague.co.uk.
