West Devon Youth League Reports and Round - Up
UNDER-11 LEAGUE
THE finalists for the Under-11 B Division Cup are now known as Cornwood Oaks will take on Ivybridge Eagles, who beat Yelverton Hurricanes in the last four.
Cornwood won through courtesy of a victory over Plympton St Mary. Cornwood asked Plympton to bat after winning the toss.
Plympton started slowly but did not throw their wickets away and at the halfway mark they were well placed on 220, only losing one wicket.
Jake Agnew increased the scoring rate, getting 12 in his stay at the wicket, befoe Owen Grimes hit a superb 26 runs as Plympton finished on 252.
All the Cornwood bowlers kept a good line, only conceding 11 extras. The pick of them were Ruben Neve (3-1-12-2) and Harry Harris (3-1-6-0).
In reply, Cornwood started slowly knowing wickets lost would be crucial in the outcome of the match.
At the halfway mark Cornwood were on 219 with Harry Harris scoring eight runs. The game was in the balance and Neve upped the rate by scoring 11 runs.
The game came down to the last pair of Tom Walbank and Daniel Warren, with Cornwood knowing 10 runs were needed to win.
With one over remaining, Cornwood were on 255, three runs in front, and the last over bowled was by Saad Shah.
Every delivery was on target and Warren, who faced the whole over, was equal to the task as Cornwood ran out winners by three runs.
The cup final will be played at Cornwood Cricket Club on Saturday, September 13 (3.30pm).
Cornwood also completed their league season with a win against Plymouth Marjon.
They batted with care and steadily scored runs adding 21 in four overs, with Ben Abbott getting seven.
The following batsmen added to the score with Tom Walbank top scoring with 13 runs in a competitive score of 273.
Marjon started slowly and were behind the clock until Alex Cottam and Stanley Langmead added 28 in four overs, which set the game up for a tight finish.
Tight bowling from Harry Harris (3-2-5-1) and Walbank (3-1-10-1) restricted Marjon to 243 as Cornwood won by 30 runs.
UNDER-13 LEAGUE
IN THE Under-13 Cup, following on from some thrilling ties last week which saw local rivals Yelverton and Buckland fail to be separated, the replay took place at Kelly College in Tavistock.
Yelverton won the toss and put Buckland into bat first with both openers departing very early on.
However, the wicket of Buckland star player Adam Talbot by Jack Smyly (7 for 2) really put the Yelverton fielders on the front foot.
Yelverton carried on their momentum with Alex Smith (5 for 3) and Lachlan Fultons (8 for 3) taking apart the Buckland middle order and tail as the innings closed on 38 after 18 overs.
Buckland went into the field knowing they required a brilliant bowling display to advance into the final.
Gareth Edwards (3 for 3) got his team off to a great start as Yelverton’s nerves started to show.
In the end, though, the total was never going to be enough as Jack Smyly’s 13 made the difference with a well-balanced innings.
Yelverton reached their target in the 10th over to progress to the final, where they will play Plympton St Maurice, who overcame Cornwood.
Cornwood, batting first, struggled to get the accurate Plympton bowlers away. A great spell of bowling by James Degg, who completed his four overs with three maidens and only three runs against, pegged Cornwood back to a final total of 75 for 3.
Plympton openers Degg and Elliot Hamilton started strongly.
Degg hit a four off the first ball of the innings and Hamilton scored a huge six into the car park when he faced his faced delivery.
This set the tone for the innings and although Plympton lost Degg with the score on 38, Hamilton and Will Cane saw Plympton to victory in 9.4 overs.
UNDER-15 LEAGUE
IN A season which got off to a slow start because of inclement weather all clubs are to be congratulated for completing every fixture bar one, which is due to be played early in August. It is an excellent achievement by all concerned.
Yelverton had a handsome win over a depleted Cornwood side by 140 runs after posting a mammoth total of 197 for 3, which included an opening partnership of 178 by George Hillson (86) and Luke Julyan (67), who were both removed by Mathew Lott (2 for 27).
In reply, Joe Langsworthy (19) was the top scorer for Cornwood as they were bundled out for 57 as Lachlan Fulton (4-1-13-3) and Dan Farnham (4-1-9-3) bowled Yelverton to victory – and a place at the top of the league table as they joined Plymouth on 21 points.
Plymstock secured a top half finish with a victory over Tideford in their final match of the season and had Adam O’Brien’s 56 not out and Fraser Cowan (23) to thank for their total of 111 for 5.
Tom Osbourne was once again the pick of the Tideford attack with figures of 4-2-9-2.
In reply, Tideford were always behind the ask rate after Fraser Cowan had removed their first four batsmen.
His figures were 4-1-4-10 and helped restrict Tideford to 99 for 5, with Tom Osbourne top scoring with 21 not out.
Plympton recorded their highest score of the season as they reached a huge total of 170 for 9 against bottom club Whitchurch.
Jonty Walliker (53) top scored and was well supported by Owen Gannon (29) and Elliott Hamilton (20), with the rest of the team all chipping in.
Nathan Ord, with 3 for 32, was Whitchurch’s leading bowler.
Plympton’s total was always beyond the reach of the moorlanders as their innings closed on 84 for 9. Tom Cotter (33) once again batted well for the home side.
In the one remaining fixture, Lewdown maintained their title challenge with a hard fought victory over Ivybridge as they won off the final ball.
Ivybridge batted first and reached a total of 85 for 5 with Abraham Kopparabil (28) top scoring, supported by Gemma Lancater (17 not out) and a healthy extras column.
Despite a good bowling and fielding performance by the Bridgers, Lewdown were strong enough to force a last ball victory in this exciting game.
Leon Horn (31 not out) and Stanley Ferber (22) were the main run scorers for Lewdown.
But they had Jacob Brown (8 not out) and Horn to thank for their win as they held their nerve to steer them to 89 for 4 in an exciting finish.
