DEVON County Cricket Club has appointed Tim Western as its new high performance manager for the Devon Lions, whose main purpose is to nurture and develop the county’s emerging cricketing stars.
Devon CCC’s director of cricket, Roger Newman, said: “We introduced the concept of the Lions to Devon in 2010 with the advice and guidance of current England coach Andy Flower and David Parsons of the England & Wales Cricket Board (ECB), and we now see the Lions as an integral part of the player pathway.”
“Our younger players made a significant contribution to the winning of the Minor Counties’ Championship in 2011, and we need to cultivate the next crop of talented individuals by focusing on identifying, inspiring and developing the abilities of the best young cricketers in Devon.”
Neil Gamble, chief executive of Devon CCC added: “Tim Western, an ECB level three coach and experienced Devon league cricketer, is passionate about creating a stronger core of young players within Devon who can challenge for county places.
“He is also committed to giving successful Devon League players an opportunity to represent the county'.
Tim Western said: “I am delighted to have been offered this important position. Cricket as a sport has never been more popular in Devon, and my main objective is to identify and develop young players who are not only ready to play Minor Counties’ cricket, but who can also win games.”
Around 18 of the brightest young stars in Devon cricket will form a high-performance squad and be invited to attend a series of sessions in the New Year.
Western added: “Devon Lions bridges the gap between highly successful Devon youth set- up, the emerging players programme and the Minor Counties’ team. The Lions are an important stepping stone to county representation.”
The Devon Lions will showcase their talents against the full county side in a pre-season warm up game at Axminster Cricket Club on Sunday, April 1.
