Tributes paid to umpire Andy White

TRIBUTES have been paid to umpire Andy White, who has died.

White, who lived in Tavistock, first appeared on the league umpiring panel in 2003.

Gavin Lane, the chairman of DACO in West Devon, said White was a respected panel umpire and stalwart of the branch.

He added: “A few years ago Andy suffered a bad injury to his leg and was unable to stand.

“Once back in action he rose steadily through the divisions on the DCL panel.

“He became a DCL result secretary in 2014, until his illness forced him to stop this role and umpiring.

“A large, gentle man, Andy played a full part in DACO activities and will be sorely missed.”

White was a teacher at Tavistock Community College, where he taught mathematics.

A statement issued by the college said: “The whole college community were deeply saddened to learn of the death of Andy White.

“He was a lovely man and respected teacher who will be greatly missed.

“Our thoughts and condolences go to his family.”

He is survived by wife Ruth and the couple's children Jessica and Matthew.

A thanksgiving service for Andy White will take place at Tavistock Methodist Church, where he was a member of the congregation, next Friday (September 26) at 4.30pm.

“Everyone who wishes to come is welcome - black attire definitely not required,” said Ruth.

“If you are able to come, there will be some light refreshments in the church hall afterwards, which will give us chance to catch up with you properly.

“If you have any special cricketing memories of Andy that you are happy to share, then please email them to me.

“I would like the service - and get together afterwards - to be a celebration of Andy's life.

“We thought the best way to do that was a sharing of our memories of him.”
